How to make a Veterans Day math worksheet

The page opens on Stars and stripes: flag facts to multiply. A long row on the flag has six stars and a short row has five, so pupils multiply real numbers. Open the Sheet type menu for other grades. Kindergarten counts stars, grade 2 adds 46 pupils and 38 guests at an assembly, and grade 4 multiplies thirteen stripes by 6 flags. Choose 4, 6 or 8 under Problems, press Make a new sheet for new numbers, then Print. The answer key follows on its own page.

  • Every story is about thanks and remembrance: flags, cards, parades, assemblies. None describes combat, which matters in a class with military families.
  • Check the flag by rows: 5 long rows of six and 4 short rows of five make 30 + 20 = 50 stars.

All 13 sheet types

Kindergarten 2

  • Flags and thank-you cards: addition stories within 10 5 small flags by the door and 3 by the window are 8 flags. Read the story aloud and let pupils show each group on their fingers.
  • Star poster: count how many stars in all A row of 4 stars and a row of 3 stars make 7 stars. Pupils touch each star once as they count.

Grade 1 2

  • Parade day addition stories within 20 9 scouts and 7 band members march past, which is 16 marchers. Make ten first: 9 + 1 + 6.
  • Thank-you card subtraction stories within 20 The class made 15 thank-you cards and has mailed 8, so 7 are still to mail. Count up from 8 to 15 to check.

Grade 2 2

  • Care package subtraction stories within 100 The school wants to pack 72 care packages and has packed 45, so 27 are left to pack. Open a ten before taking 5 from 2.

Grade 3 3

  • Parade rows and card packs: multiplication stories 8 rows of 6 marchers is 48 marchers. Pupils can draw the rows as an array of dots.
  • Sharing flags and cards: division stories within 100 54 small flags shared equally among 6 classes is 9 flags each. The matching fact is 6 × 9 = 54.
  • Stars and stripes: flag facts to multiply A long row on the flag has six stars, so 5 long rows hold 30 stars. The other 20 stars are 4 short rows of five.

Grade 4 2

  • Parade buses and care packages: what happens to the remainder? 75 marchers ride buses that hold 9 each. 75 ÷ 9 = 8 R 3, so 9 buses are needed: the last 3 marchers still need a ride.
  • Thirteen stripes and fifty stars to multiply One flag has thirteen stripes, so 6 flags have 78: 6 × 10 = 60 and 6 × 3 = 18. Fifty stars on each of 6 flags is 300.

Grade 5 2

  • Assembly hall multiplication: 2 digits by 2 digits 26 rows of 32 chairs is 832 chairs. Add two partial products: 26 × 30 = 780 and 26 × 2 = 52.
  • Flag box division: divide by 2 digits 432 small flags packed in boxes of 18 fill 24 boxes. Estimate first: 400 ÷ 20 = 20.

How this list was compiled: The stories, their wording and the teaching notes are our own work. The numbers are drawn fresh for every sheet and each answer key is worked out from the numbers printed on that sheet. The flag facts were checked on 2026-09-20 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_States: thirteen stripes that alternate red and white and start with red (so seven are red and six are white), and fifty five-pointed stars in nine offset rows, where rows of six stars alternate with rows of five. The date of the holiday, November 11 every year, and its spelling without an apostrophe were checked the same day at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day. Parade, assembly, card and care package numbers are invented for the stories. Grade labels follow the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, read on 2026-09-20 in the California Department of Education copy, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf.
