Questions and answers
What is the difference between a prefix and a suffix?
A prefix goes at the front of a word and changes its meaning: happy, unhappy. A suffix goes at the end and often changes the kind of word: teach, teacher; kind, kindness.
What do the most common prefixes mean?
Un, dis, in, im and non mean not; re means again; pre means before; mis means wrongly; over means too much; under means below or too little; mid means middle.
What grade learns prefixes and suffixes?
The Common Core asks second graders to work out a new word formed when a known prefix is added (L.2.4b, happy and unhappy) and third graders to do the same with suffixes too (L.3.4b: care and careless, heat and preheat).
