What each interval holds

Every interval has 4 core sheets: read 9 clocks, draw the hands, write the time in words, and a later or earlier sheet. The half hour and quarter hour add drawing from words, picking the right clock and finding the mistake. 5 minutes: how many minutes between 2 times? and 1 minute: what time does it end? come last. For o'clock only, see the kindergarten sheets.

Every interval moves the hour hand

On the hour the hour hand sits on a number. At 8:30 it is halfway between the 8 and the 9. At 7:15 it is 1/4 of the way from the 7 to the 8. Half hour: draw the hands is the first sheet where a pupil draws it between 2 numbers.

  • Move up an interval once the draw sheet comes back right. Only drawing shows where the pupil thinks the hour hand goes.
  • Quarter hour clocks put the minute hand only on the 12, 3, 6 and 9, so a pupil can read them before counting by fives.

Questions and answers

What grade do children learn to tell time?

In Common Core states, hours and half hours in grade 1, the nearest 5 minutes in grade 2 and the nearest minute in grade 3. Texas reaches the nearest minute a year sooner, in grade 2. England's Year 2 adds quarter past and quarter to.

How do I save a telling time worksheet as a PDF?

Press Print, then choose save as PDF in your browser's print window instead of a printer. Page 1 has the sheet and page 2 the answer key. There is no file to download: Make a new sheet builds each page in your browser.

Do these telling time worksheets have an answer key?

Yes, on page 2. A reading sheet's key gives the digital times and a words sheet's key gives the wording. A drawing sheet's key prints every finished clock, with the hour hand between the numbers where a real clock has it.

What does quarter to mean on a clock?

15 minutes before the next hour. 10:45 is quarter to 11: the minute hand is on the 9 and the hour hand is 3/4 of the way from the 10 to the 11. The hour that is said is the one coming.

All 30 sheet types

To the hour 4

  • Hour: 1 hour later or earlier No clock faces. Each line gives an o'clock time and asks for the time 1 hour after it or 1 hour before it. 1 hour after 12:00 is 1:00, and 1 hour before 1:00 is 12:00, because a clock face has no 13 and no 0.
  • Hour: draw the hands 9 empty faces with a digital time under each. For 3:00 the minute hand goes straight up to the 12 and the hour hand points at the 3. The key prints each finished clock.
  • Hour: read 9 clocks 9 clocks, each on a full hour, with a line under each for the time. Minute hand on the 12 and hour hand on the 10: the time is 10:00. There are 12 o'clock times, so a page of 9 shows most of them.
  • Hour: write the time in words Each clock shows a full hour and the pupil writes it the way it is said: 6:00 is 6 o'clock. The word bank has 1 entry, o'clock.

To the half hour 8

  • Half hour: 30 minutes later or earlier No clock faces. 30 minutes after 4:30 is 5:00, and 30 minutes before 4:00 is 3:30. About half of the lines change the hour as well as the minutes.
  • Half hour: draw the hands For 2:30 the minute hand points straight down at the 6 and the hour hand belongs halfway between the 2 and the 3. The key prints it there, so a hand left on the 2 is easy to spot.
  • Half hour: draw the hands from words The time under each empty face is in words, such as half past 9, with no digits to copy. For half past 9 the minute hand goes to the 6 and the hour hand goes halfway between the 9 and the 10.
  • Half hour: find the mistake 8 clocks, each with a reading printed beside it, and about half of the readings are wrong. The pupil circles right or wrong and writes the time the clock really shows. A clock at 5:30 read as 6:30 is the mistake to expect.
  • Half hour: hour hand first, then the time 3 short lines under each of 8 clocks: the hour from the short hand, the number the long hand is on, then the time. For 3:30 the pupil writes 3, then 6, then 3:30. It slows down the pupil who sees the short hand heading for the 4 and writes 4:30.
  • Half hour: pick the right clock 5 rows, each with a digital time and 3 clocks lettered A, B and C. Only 1 clock is right. For 8:30 one of the wrong clocks shows 9:30, with the hour hand a whole hour too far on. There is nothing to write, so it is quick to mark.
  • Half hour: read 9 clocks O'clock and half past, mixed on 9 clocks. At 8:30 the minute hand is on the 6 and the hour hand is halfway between the 8 and the 9. The hour is the number the hour hand has passed, so the time is 8:30 and not 9:30.
  • Half hour: write the time in words The pupil writes each time the way it is said. 11:30 is half past 11 and 11:00 is 11 o'clock. The word bank has 2 entries, o'clock and half past.

To the quarter hour 8

  • Quarter hour: 15 minutes later or earlier No clock faces. 15 minutes after 9:45 is 10:00, and 15 minutes before 6:00 is 5:45.
  • Quarter hour: draw the hands For 1:45 the minute hand is on the 9 and the hour hand is 3/4 of the way from the 1 to the 2, close to the 2 but not on it.
  • Quarter hour: draw the hands from words Each empty face has a time in words under it: o'clock, quarter past, half past or quarter to. For quarter to 4 the minute hand goes on the 9 and the hour hand 3/4 of the way from the 3 to the 4. The hour to start from is 3, not the 4 that is said.
  • Quarter hour: find the mistake 8 clocks with a reading beside each, about half of them wrong. A clock at 2:45 read as 3:45 has the hour hand taken for the 3 it is close to. Read as 2:09, it has the 9 taken for the minutes, when 9 × 5 = 45.
  • Quarter hour: pick the right clock 5 rows, each with a digital time and 3 clocks, only 1 of them right. For 4:45 the wrong clocks show 5:45, with the hour hand a whole hour too far on, and 9:25, which is what you get with the hands swapped.
  • Quarter hour: read 9 clocks Every clock shows 00, 15, 30 or 45 minutes. At 7:15 the minute hand is on the 3 and the hour hand is 1/4 of the way from the 7 to the 8.
  • Quarter hour: read a face with only 12, 3, 6 and 9 Only 12, 3, 6 and 9 are printed, and on a quarter hour sheet the minute hand always points at one of them. At 2:15 it is on the 3, and the hour hand is 1/4 of the way from the 2 to the 3. The 2 is a plain mark, so the pupil finds the hour by counting marks.
  • Quarter hour: write the time in words 10:45 is quarter to 11, so the hour that is said is the next one. 10:15 is quarter past 10. The word bank has o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to.

To 5 minutes 5

  • 5 minutes: 5 or 10 minutes later or earlier No clock faces. 10 minutes after 4:55 is 5:05, and 5 minutes before 8:00 is 7:55.
  • 5 minutes: draw the hands For 11:25 the minute hand goes on the 5, because 5 × 5 = 25. The hour hand is 5/12 of the way from the 11 to the 12.
  • 5 minutes: how many minutes between 2 times? No clock faces. Each line gives a start and an end, and the pupil writes the minutes between them. From 2:40 to 3:05 is 25 minutes: 20 to reach 3:00 and 5 more. The key shows that jump wherever the hour changes.
  • 5 minutes: read 9 clocks The minute hand always points at a number, and that number times 5 gives the minutes. At 3:40 it is on the 8, and 8 × 5 = 40. The hour hand is 2/3 of the way from the 3 to the 4.
  • 5 minutes: write the time in words Up to the half hour the minutes are counted past the hour, and after it they are counted to the next hour. 6:20 is 20 minutes past 6 and 6:50 is 10 minutes to 7. The quarter hours keep their own names: 6:15 is quarter past 6.

To the minute 5

  • 1 minute: a few minutes across the hour No clock faces, and every line crosses an hour. 3 minutes after 6:58 is 7:01, and 2 minutes before 4:01 is 3:59.
  • 1 minute: draw the hands For 12:07 the minute hand goes 2 small marks past the 1, because 1 × 5 = 5 and 5 + 2 = 7. The hour hand has only just left the 12.
  • 1 minute: read 9 clocks Count by fives to the number the minute hand has passed, then count on by ones. At 9:23 the minute hand is 3 small marks past the 4: 4 × 5 = 20, then 21, 22, 23.
  • 1 minute: what time does it end? No clock faces, and every line runs past the hour. 25 minutes after 6:48 is 7:13, because 48 + 25 = 73 and 73 − 60 = 13. The key shows the sum for every line.
  • 1 minute: write the time in words 2:47 is 13 minutes to 3, because 60 − 47 = 13, and 2:13 is 13 minutes past 2. A single minute loses its s: 2:59 is written 1 minute to 3.
