10 problems. Elapsed time to the minute: how many minutes? Sheet CDM8QN, with its answer key.

How it works

These elapsed time worksheets grade 3 open on ten problems that ask how many minutes pass between two times. Other sheets are the clock worksheets grade 3 classes need: faces to read and draw to the minute.

Count up to the next hour

From 2:47 to 3:12, jump 13 minutes to 3:00, then 12 more: 25 minutes. Where the hour changes, the key prints the two jumps. Elapsed time inside one hour, to the minute never crosses an o'clock, so a pupil can subtract the minutes. On paper, draw the jumps on a blank number line.

What grade 3 adds to clock reading

Common Core asks grade 3 for time to the nearest minute, for intervals measured in minutes, and for word problems that add and subtract those intervals. The two story sheets add or subtract lengths of time; the clock sheets print all 60 minute marks.

  • At 6:52 the short hand is almost on the 7. Ask which number it has passed before the pupil writes the hour.
  • Minutes take two digits: 8 minutes past 8 is 8:08. Start time to the minute, inside one hour gives plenty of answers under ten minutes.

Questions and answers

What is elapsed time in 3rd grade math?

The time that passes from a start to an end. Third graders measure it in minutes: from 9:14 to 9:51 is 37 minutes. They also solve word problems that add or subtract lengths of time in minutes.

How do you teach elapsed time to third graders?

Count up in jumps. Go from the start to the next o'clock, then on to the end, and add the jumps: from 4:26 to 5:09 is 34 minutes and then 9 minutes, 43 in all.

Do the grade 3 elapsed time worksheets have an answer key?

Yes. The key prints as the last page, and where the hour changes it shows the jumps. To print the sheet alone, untick Answer key before you press Print.

How do you read a clock to the minute?

Count by fives to the number the long hand has passed, then count the small marks. Three marks past the 8 is 40 + 3 = 43 minutes. The short hand names the hour it has passed, not the one it is near.

Elapsed time: how long? 4

  • Elapsed time inside one hour, to the minute Both times are in the same hour, so the minutes can be subtracted: from 9:14 to 9:51 is 51 − 14 = 37 minutes. No problem on this sheet crosses an o'clock.
  • Elapsed time to the minute: how many minutes? From 2:47 to 3:12 an o'clock comes in between. It is 13 minutes up to 3:00 and 12 minutes beyond it, and 13 + 12 = 25 minutes in all. Common Core grade 3 measures time intervals in minutes, 3.MD.1.
  • Longer than an hour: hours and minutes, up to 3 hours From 1:38 to 3:56 takes three jumps: 22 minutes to 2:00, 60 minutes to 3:00, then 56 minutes. 22 + 60 + 56 = 138 minutes, which is 2 hours 18 minutes. Every answer is under 3 hours.
  • Warm-up: five-minute times, under an hour Every time ends in 0 or 5, so the jumps are counts by five. From 6:50 to 7:25 is 10 minutes to 7:00 and 25 more: 10 + 25 = 35 minutes. A step back for a pupil who is not yet sure of the minute marks.

End times and start times 4

  • End or start? The missing time, to the minute A mixed sheet: a line may ask for the time after or the time before. 44 minutes after 11:36 is 12:20, since 36 + 44 = 80 and 80 − 60 = 20, and 44 minutes before 12:20 is 11:36 again.
  • End time to the minute: when does it end? 43 minutes after 4:26 is 5:09: 26 + 43 = 69, and 69 minutes is one hour and 9 minutes. When the minutes pass 60, the hour goes up by one and 60 comes off the minutes.
  • Start time to the minute, inside one hour 37 minutes before 8:45 is 8:08, because 45 − 37 = 8. The minutes take two digits, so 8 minutes past the hour is written 8:08 and never 8:8.
  • Up to 3 hours later, to the minute 2 hours 15 minutes after 7:52: two hours on is 9:52, and 15 minutes more is 10:07, because 52 + 15 = 67 and 67 − 60 = 7. Add the hours first, then the minutes.

Read the clock to the minute 4

  • Read the clock to the minute The long hand sits 3 small marks past the 8. The 8 stands for 8 × 5 = 40 minutes and 40 + 3 = 43, so with the short hand between the 7 and the 8 the clock shows 7:43.
  • Read the clock: 1 to 29 minutes past Minutes 1 to 29 only, while the short hand is still near its own number. The long hand 2 small marks beyond the 3 shows 3 × 5 = 15 and 15 + 2 = 17, so with the short hand just past the 4 it is 4:17.
  • Read the clock: 31 to 59 minutes past Times in the second half hour, when the short hand has nearly reached the hour to come. At 6:52 it almost touches the 7, yet the hour is 6. For the minutes, 10 × 5 = 50 and 50 + 2 = 52.
  • Read to the minute with minute numbers on the rim For a pupil who cannot yet turn dial numbers into minutes: the rim carries 5, 10, 15 and so on. Three small marks beyond the rim's 35 is 35 + 3 = 38, and the time is 5:38.

Draw the hands 3

  • Draw the hands from words: minutes past and minutes to The time comes in words. 17 minutes to 8 means 60 − 17 = 43 minutes after 7, so it is 7:43: long hand 3 small marks beyond the 8, short hand nearly at the 8. Finished clocks are on the key.
  • Draw the hour hand, minutes given Only the short hand is missing. At 10:48 it goes 4/5 of the way from the 10 toward the 11, because 48 of the hour's 60 minutes are gone. A short hand drawn straight at the 10 is the usual slip.
  • Draw the minute hand to the minute The short hand is printed already. For 6:22 the long hand goes 2 small marks past the 4, because 4 × 5 = 20 and 20 + 2 = 22. It has to reach the marks at the rim.

Minutes past and minutes to 3

  • Minutes past and minutes to the next hour Lines of digits only. Past the half hour a time has two names: 9:49 is 49 minutes past 9, and 60 − 49 = 11 makes it 11 minutes to 10. The second name uses the hour still to come.
  • Past 12: a.m. and p.m. change, to the minute With a.m. or p.m. on every time. 35 minutes after 11:47 a.m. is 12:22 p.m.: 47 + 35 = 82 and 82 − 60 = 22. Each line passes noon or midnight, so the letters always change.
  • Write the time in words, to the minute Under each clock the pupil writes the time in words. A clock at 4:52 is 8 minutes to 5, since 60 − 52 = 8, and a clock at 4:27 is 27 minutes past 4.

Word problems in minutes 2

  • How many more minutes? Subtraction stories A cake needs 45 minutes and has been in the oven for 28: 45 − 28 = 17 minutes to go. Counting up from 28 to 45 gives the same 17. The stories compare two lengths of time or ask what is left.
  • Two activities: addition stories in minutes Reading for 25 minutes and drawing for 18 minutes takes 25 + 18 = 43 minutes. Every total is under an hour, so no answer has to be changed into hours. A number line from 0 to 60 is a good place to show the two jumps.
