Half past first, then o'clock mixed in

Half past on every clock keeps the long hand on the 6, so the pupil only has to find the hour. For telling time worksheets hour and half hour together, pick O'clock and half past, hours 1 to 6, then O'clock and half past, hours 7 to 12.

Why 4:30 gets read as 5:30

At half past the short hand is halfway to the next number, and a pupil who reads the number it is heading for writes 5:30. Draw the short hand: on the number or halfway practices where it sits. This hour or the next? Find the mistake at half past has the pupil catch that slip in someone else's answer.

  • At 12:30 the short hand is halfway between the 12 and the 1. That clock can come up on the hours 7 to 12 sheet.
  • The answer key prints as the last page. Untick Answer key to print the pupil page alone.

Questions and answers

What do telling time worksheets grade 1 have to cover?

Hours and half hours. The Common Core and Texas both ask first graders to tell time to the hour and half hour on analog and digital clocks, and England's Year 1 adds drawing the hands. Every clock here is on the hour or half hour.

Where does the hour hand point at half past?

Halfway between two numbers. At 7:30 the short hand is 1/2 of the way from the 7 to the 8, because half of the hour has gone by. Every clock here is drawn that way, never with the short hand on the 7.

How many clocks are on these time worksheets for 1st grade?

Six on the opening sheet, and the Problems menu changes that to 4, 8 or 12. Only 12 half past times exist, so a page of 6 does not show the same clock twice.

Is half past the same as 30 minutes past?

Yes. 5:30 is half past 5, which is 30 minutes after 5:00, because half of an hour's 60 minutes is 30. 30 minutes after o'clock practices that jump with no clock faces.

All 22 sheet types

Read half past 4

  • Half past on every clock Every clock is at half past, with a line under each for the time. Long hand on the 6, short hand halfway between the 4 and the 5: the time is 4:30. Only 12 half past times exist, and no clock appears twice on a page.
  • Half past: short hand first, then the time 3 short lines under each clock: the hour the short hand has passed, the number the long hand is on, then the time. For 9:30 the pupil writes 9, then 6, then 9:30. It is aimed at the slip of reading the number the short hand is heading for.
  • O'clock or half past with only 12, 3, 6 and 9 A harder face: only 12, 3, 6 and 9 are printed, with a plain mark at every other hour. The long hand points at the 12 or the 6. With the long hand on the 6 and the short hand halfway between the 3 and the next mark, the time is 3:30.
  • Write half past in words Under each clock the pupil writes the time the way it is said. Long hand on the 6, short hand halfway between the 2 and the 3: half past 2. 2:30 is half past 2, and every clock on the sheet is a half past.

O'clock and half past together 4

  • Half past: circle the clock that shows the time A digital time and a row of 3 clocks with a letter under each. All 3 clocks are at half past, so only the short hand tells them apart: for 8:30 the pupil circles the clock whose short hand is halfway between the 8 and the 9.
  • O'clock and half past, hours 1 to 6 Hours and half hours on one page, with the short hand between the 1 and the 7. Long hand on the 12 and short hand on the 5 is 5:00. Long hand on the 6 and short hand halfway between the 5 and the 6 is 5:30.
  • O'clock and half past, hours 7 to 12 The same mix with the short hand between the 7 and the 1, so 12:00 and 12:30 can come up. At 12:00 both hands point at the 12. At 12:30 the short hand is halfway between the 12 and the 1.
  • Which of the 2 clocks? O'clock and half past A time and only 2 clocks to choose between. For 6:30 one clock has the short hand halfway between the 6 and the 7 and the other does not. The pupil circles a letter and writes no time.

Draw the hands 4

  • Draw both hands at half past 6 empty faces with a digital time under each, all at half past. For 1:30 draw the long hand down to the 6 first, then the short hand halfway between the 1 and the 2. The key shows each finished clock.
  • Draw half past from words The time under each empty face is printed the way it is said, with no colon. For half past 11 the pupil draws the long hand to the 6 and the short hand halfway between the 11 and the 12.
  • Draw the long hand: to the 12 or to the 6 The short hand is printed and the pupil draws the long one. It has only 2 places to go: straight up to the 12 for o'clock, straight down to the 6 for half past. For 10:30 it points at the 6.
  • Draw the short hand: on the number or halfway The long hand is printed and the pupil draws the short one. At 7:00 it points straight at the 7. At half past 7 it sits halfway between the 7 and the 8, because half of the hour has gone by.

Find the mistake 3

  • Is the 6 six minutes or thirty? Find the mistake About half of the answers read the long hand's number as minutes. A clock at 2:30 marked 2:06 is wrong: the long hand on the 6 means 30 minutes, half of the 60 in an hour.
  • This hour or the next? Find the mistake at half past Each clock has an answer written beside it, and about half of the answers name the next hour. A clock at 4:30 marked 5:30 is wrong: the short hand has passed the 4 and has not reached the 5 yet.
  • Which hand is which? Find the mistake at o'clock About half of the answers mix up the 2 hands. A clock at 3:00 marked 12:15 is wrong: the short hand tells the hour, so the hour is 3, and the long hand on the 12 means o'clock.

No clock faces 5

  • 1 hour after half past A whole hour on from a half past time. 1 hour after 6:30 is 7:30: the hour goes up by 1 and the minutes stay at 30. 1 hour after 12:30 is 1:30, because the numbers on a clock start again after 12.
  • 30 minutes after half past No clock faces, and every line starts at half past. 30 minutes after 4:30 is 5:00, because 30 + 30 = 60 and 60 minutes make the next hour. 30 minutes after 12:30 is 1:00.
  • 30 minutes after o'clock No clock faces. Each line gives an o'clock time and asks for the time 30 minutes later. 30 minutes after 4:00 is 4:30. The hour stays the same and the minutes go from 00 to 30.
  • Half past facts to read aloud No clock faces: short questions for an adult to read aloud, with a line for each answer. At half past, which number does the long hand point to? 6. How many half hours make 1 whole hour? 2.
  • Hours and half hours in order through the day A stretch sheet with no clock faces: 3 times with a.m. or p.m. to write in order, starting from midnight. 5:30 a.m. comes before 9:30 a.m., and both come before 11:00 a.m. The words a.m. and p.m. are second grade work in the Common Core.

Review 2

  • O'clock and half past, any hour The whole of first grade clock reading on one page: o'clock and half past mixed, hours 1 to 12. Long hand on the 6, short hand halfway between the 10 and the 11: 10:30.
  • O'clock only: a warm-up A warm-up before half past comes in. Every clock is on the hour: long hand on the 12 and short hand on the 9 is 9:00.
