How it works
Free elapsed time worksheets ask one of three things: how long, when it ends, or when it started. The sheets run from half hours to 12 hours to the minute, and each prints its answer key on page 2.

Jump to the next hour
From 3:40 to 4:15, jump 20 minutes to 4:00, then 15 more: 35 minutes. Where a problem crosses an o'clock, the key shows the jumps. Inside the hour sheets never cross one, so a pupil can subtract the minutes; Across the hour sheets always do.
From half hours to 12 hours
Start with half and quarter hours, then 5 minutes inside and across the hour, then to the minute. The Over an hour sheets answer in hours and minutes. The last sheet crosses noon or midnight and asks for a.m. or p.m.
- Writing 75 minutes for 3:40 to 4:15 means 340 was taken from 415. An hour has 60 minutes, not 100.
Questions and answers
What grade learns elapsed time?
In Common Core states, grade 3 measures time intervals in minutes and solves word problems that add and take them away, often on a number line. Grade 4 works with intervals of time using all four operations.
How do you find elapsed time?
Jump from the start to the next o'clock, then jump whole hours, then the minutes left, and add the jumps. From 9:25 to 12:15 is 35 minutes, 2 hours and 15 minutes: 2 hours 50 minutes.
Do the elapsed time worksheets have an answer key?
Yes, on page 2. A sheet with hours in the answer writes them as 2 hours 15 minutes, and a noon or midnight sheet gives a.m. or p.m. with every time.
