How it works
These kindergarten telling time worksheets stay at o'clock: the long hand on the 12, the short hand on a number. The opening sheet prints 6 clocks with the key on page 2, and Make a new sheet changes the times.

Telling time worksheets, kindergarten: what to print first
Telling time worksheets for kindergarten belong at o'clock: the long hand never leaves the 12, so the short hand does all the telling and the pupil reads 1 number. Start with O'clock on 6 clocks. With o'clock only there are 12 possible clocks, so a 6-clock page never repeats one. Draw the short hand comes next: its long hand is already printed.
When a pupil is ready for more
1 hour later has no clock faces and 1 surprise: 1 hour after 12:00 is 1:00, because the numbers start again. After that the next step is half past, which is on the page where you pick the interval.
- Say short hand and long hand at first. The names hour hand and minute hand can wait until half past, when minutes start to matter.
- At 12:00 both hands point at the 12, one on top of the other. Show that clock before handing out O'clock from 7 to 12.
Questions and answers
Is telling time a kindergarten standard?
Not in the Common Core or Texas, which both start clocks in grade 1 with hours and half hours. England's Year 1 (ages 5 and 6) asks for the hour and half past. In the US these pages are a head start, not graded work.
Can kindergarten pupils do these sheets without reading?
An adult reads the task line at the top once. On the clock sheets the pupil then writes a time, draws a hand or circles a letter. The 3 sheets without clock faces, such as 1 hour earlier, need every line read aloud.
What does o'clock mean on a clock?
It marks a full hour. The long hand points straight up at the 12 and the short hand points at the hour, so 4 o'clock is written 4:00. Every clock on this page shows a full hour.
