How it works
This preposition grammar worksheet opens on short sentences with one blank and three small words to choose from. A second set, for older grades, asks for the whole prepositional phrase of a sentence.

Pick the preposition
Each blank takes one of thirteen prepositions: to, from, in, out, on, off, for, of, by, with, during, beyond and toward. In The cat slipped ___ the door, only out fits; of and during do not. Each of the thirteen is the answer six or more times.
Prepositional phrase worksheets for 4th and 5th grade
Under Set, pick Find the prepositional phrase. A lizard darted under the porch steps is followed by three groups of its words, and the child circles under the porch steps: the preposition, its object and the words between.
- A prepositional phrase starts with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun, its object.
- The wrong choices are prepositions too, so the blank cannot be filled by spotting the only preposition.
Questions and answers
What prepositions do kindergartners learn?
The Common Core lists the most frequently occurring ones for kindergarten: to, from, in, out, on, off, for, of, by and with (L.K.1e). The opening set uses these ten and three more from first grade.
Do these work as preposition worksheets for 1st grade?
Yes. During, beyond and toward are the first grade examples in the Common Core (L.1.1i), and each is the answer to six or more sentences of the opening set, such as Nobody sneezed ___ the concert.
Is there a 4th grade preposition worksheet here?
Yes, the second set. Forming and using prepositional phrases is a grade 4 standard (L.4.1e), and that set uses harder prepositions such as beneath, among, throughout and despite. It also works as a preposition worksheet for 5th grade.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The last page is the key, with the right choice circled under each sentence and written in where there is a blank. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
