How this list was compiled: Written for this page: every line of speech and every sign, label, note and recipe quoted is our own. A blank stands where the spoken or quoted words belong, or where the words that lead in to them belong, and the three choices differ only in their quotation marks, commas and end marks. The key follows American usage: a comma or period goes inside the closing quotation mark, a comma follows said or says before a quotation, and a quotation that ends in a question mark or exclamation point takes no comma. The skill is L.3.2c (commas and quotation marks in dialogue) and L.4.2b (commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech and quotations from a text) in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, published at thecorestandards.org, read 3 October 2026; the rule for where the marks sit was read in the Wikipedia article Quotation marks in English the same day. No real person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

Each sentence has a blank where the spoken or quoted words go, or where the words that lead in to them go. The three choices have the same words and differ only in their marks.

Punctuating dialogue

In ___ said Hana, the right choice is "The bus is late," with the comma inside the closing mark. After a lead-in such as Dad called, a comma comes first and the period stays inside: Dad called, "Dinner is ready." A question mark or exclamation point takes the place of the comma.

Words from a sign or a text

Under Set, the second set quotes signs, labels, notes and recipes of our own: The label says, "Shake well before using." The marks go where they go in dialogue.

  • The key follows American usage: commas and periods inside the closing quotation mark, and a comma after said.
  • Titles in quotation marks and a quotation inside a quotation are not on these sheets.

Questions and answers

Where does the comma go with quotation marks?

Inside. In American usage a comma or period goes before the closing quotation mark: "I packed the map," said Uncle Ray. When the speaker comes first, the comma follows said: Mom said, "The pan is hot."

What grade learns quotation marks?

Grades 3 and 4 in the Common Core: commas and quotation marks in dialogue (L.3.2c), then in direct speech and quotations from a text (L.4.2b). The Dialogue set also serves as 3rd grade quotation marks worksheets.

Can I use these as 2nd grade quotation marks worksheets?

Yes. The spoken lines are short, such as "My shoe is untied," said Pia, so they suit a class that has met quotation marks, and 5th grade as review. The grade is our suggestion.

Are these 4th grade dialogue worksheets too?

For the punctuation, yes: the Dialogue set is lines of speech with said, asked, whispered and other tags. Writing your own dialogue, with a new paragraph for each speaker, is not on these sheets.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The last page is the key, with the right choice circled under each sentence and written in where there is a blank. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
