How this list was compiled: Written by hand for this page: 152 sentences, each with one word repeated in brackets after it and tagged with the job that word does in that sentence. Some words (paint, light, race, knock, look, snow) appear as a noun in one sentence and a verb in another, on purpose. The four parts of speech follow Wikipedia's Part of speech article, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Part_of_speech, read 2026-09-23. No person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

Each sheet draws 8 of our 152 sentences. The word in brackets is the one to name, and the sentence decides: paint is a noun in The paint on the door is still wet and a verb in Please paint the box blue.

Noun verb adjective adverb worksheet

Set picks one. Nouns, verbs, adjectives gives three words to circle under every sentence, 30 of each kind. With adverbs adds a fourth choice and 17 sentences whose word is an adverb: slowly, soon, never, upstairs.

Ask what the word does

A noun names a person, place, animal or thing. A verb is what someone or something does. An adjective tells what kind or how many. An adverb tells how, when or where something happens.

  • Six words (paint, light, race, knock, look, snow) are nouns in one sentence and verbs in another: print both for a class talk.

Questions and answers

Is there a nouns and verbs worksheet without adjectives?

Not as a set of its own. Type your own lines instead: a sentence, the word in brackets, an equals sign, then the answer and the wrong one: The cat slept. (slept) = verb / noun.

Why can one word be a noun and a verb?

The part of speech is the job a word does in its sentence, not a fact about the word. We heard a knock uses knock as a noun; knock on the door uses it as a verb.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. It prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options. The key circles the right label under every sentence of the sheet you print.
