How it works
Alliteration is the same first sound at the start of words that stand close together. One set finishes a line with the word that keeps the sound; the other asks which words of a sentence share it.

Finish the alliteration
In Six silly seals ___ in the sun, the choices are sat, played and napped. Only sat begins with the s sound. The two wrong words always start with a different letter and a different sound.
Find the alliteration
Pick this set under Set. A cold wind whipped the willows by the pond is followed by three groups of its words; wind, whipped, willows is the group that starts alike.
- Alliteration goes by sound, not spelling: a noisy knight knocks at noon, and Fay's phone fell on the floor.
- The sentences are our own; no well-known tongue twister is on the sheets.
Questions and answers
What is alliteration?
Alliteration is the repeating of the same beginning sound in words that are near each other, as in busy bees buzz by the barn. It is common in poems, rhymes and tongue twisters.
What grade learns alliteration?
Grade 2 in the Common Core, where students describe how words and phrases such as alliteration, rhymes and regular beats supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem or song (RL.2.4).
Can I use these as alliteration worksheets for 4th grade?
Yes. Find the alliteration is the harder set, with the repeated sound inside an ordinary sentence. It also serves as alliteration worksheets for 5th grade. The Finish set has short lines for 1st and 2nd grade. The grades are our suggestion.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The last page is the key, with the right choice circled under each sentence and written in where there is a blank. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
