Period or question mark
The page opens on this set. The otter naps on a log tells something, so it ends with a period. Where is my yellow rain hat asks something, so it ends with a question mark. The asking sentences start with words such as who, where, can, did and is.
End punctuation worksheets for 1st grade
Under Set, pick Period, question, exclamation. A third of those sentences show strong feeling and open with a word such as Wow, Ouch, Hooray or Oh no, or with What a or How. What a tall sunflower takes an exclamation point.
- The line printed on the sheet says Circle the word that fits; here the choices are the marks themselves.
- Sentences are four to seven words long; the only commas follow an opening word such as Wow.
Questions and answers
What punctuation do kindergartners learn?
End marks. The Common Core asks kindergartners to recognize and name end punctuation (L.K.2b) and first graders to use end punctuation for sentences (L.1.2b). Commas start in first grade; apostrophes and quotation marks come later.
Do these work as 1st grade punctuation worksheets?
Yes. Choosing the mark that ends a sentence is the first grade standard (L.1.2b), and the three-mark set under Set is the harder of the two. The grade is our suggestion.
Is there a question mark worksheet for kindergarten?
The opening set is one. Half of its sentences ask something and take a question mark, and the other half tell something and take a period, so a child has to tell the two apart.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The last page is the key, with the right mark circled and written at the end of each sentence. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
