How to order a set
Find the least number, write it, cross it out, and repeat. To compare two numbers, count their digits, then read the first digit that differs: 44 < 47 < 70 < 74. Texas names ordering in its standards, up to 120 in grade 1, 1,200 in grade 2 and 100,000 in grade 3. Common Core compares two numbers at a time.
Sets that share their digits
In Order four look-alike numbers to 99: 47, 74, 44, 70 a glance at the first digit is not enough, so pupils read tens and ones each time. The signs printed between the blanks show the way: < runs from least to greatest and > from greatest to least.
- On a both ways sheet, have pupils circle the first sign on each line before they write anything.
- On the sheet to 120, sort by the number of digits first: every 3-digit number comes after every 2-digit one.
