Rounding to the Nearest Hundred Worksheet, 3 Digits and Up

Press Make a new sheet for twenty new numbers to round to the nearest hundred, then Print.

20 problems. Round 3-digit numbers to the nearest hundred. Sheet 224UFP, with its answer key.

How it works

This rounding to the nearest hundred worksheet opens on twenty 3-digit numbers, each with a line for the answer. The menu adds sheets without halfway numbers, 4-digit and 5-digit numbers, the two hundreds a number lies between, and estimating.

The rule

Find the two hundreds the number lies between and pick the closer one: 467 is between 400 and 500 and closer to 500. The tens digit decides: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up, so 250 goes up to 300. Common Core places rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 in grade 3 (3.NBT.1).

Where it goes wrong

A pupil who looks at the ones digit rounds 349 up, because of the 9. Only the tens digit counts, and 349 is closer to 300. Which two hundreds is a 3-digit number between? makes the two choices visible. On Numbers from 501 to 999: 950 and above round to 1,000 the answer can gain a digit.

  • Have pupils underline the hundreds digit and circle the tens digit before they round.
  • A number below 50 rounds to 0. The sheet for numbers to 199 practices that.

Questions and answers

How do you round to the nearest hundred?

Look at the tens digit. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, keep the hundreds digit and write two zeros: 432 rounds to 400. If it is 5 or more, go up to the next hundred: 467 rounds to 500.

What does 250 round to?

To 300. 250 is exactly halfway between 200 and 300, so neither is closer, and the rule taught in school sends a halfway number up. The opening sheet has a few of these, and two sheets leave them out.

Is this also a rounding to the nearest 100 worksheet?

Yes. The nearest hundred and the nearest 100 are the same thing. Every sheet here rounds to the nearest 100, and one also asks for the nearest ten beside it, so pupils see the two answers side by side.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The key prints as the last page with every rounded number filled in. The Answer key box starts ticked; untick it before you press Print to get the sheet alone.

All 12 sheet types

3-digit numbers and smaller 6

  • Nearest hundred with no halfway numbers: 3 digits The same twenty-number sheet with every number ending in 50 left out, so one hundred is always closer than the other: 748 rounds to 700 and 151 rounds to 200. A first sheet, before the halfway rule is taught.
  • Numbers from 101 to 499 to the nearest hundred A smaller range with five possible answers, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500: 369 rounds to 400 and 311 rounds to 300. Twenty numbers, a few of them halfway, such as 250, which goes up to 300.
  • Numbers from 501 to 999: 950 and above round to 1,000 The upper half of the 3-digit numbers. 836 rounds to 800, and anything from 950 up rounds to 1,000, so 963 gains a digit when it is rounded. Twenty numbers, a few of them halfway.
  • Numbers to 199: the nearest hundred is 0, 100 or 200 Small numbers, where pupils are slow to accept 0 as an answer: 17 rounds to 0, 95 rounds to 100 and 143 rounds to 100, since 100 < 143 < 200. Twelve numbers from 1 to 199; 50 and 150 go up when they appear.
  • Round 3-digit numbers to the nearest hundred The sheet the page opens on: twenty numbers from 101 to 999, each with an arrow and a line. 467 rounds to 500 and 432 rounds to 400, since 400 < 432 < 500 and 432 is closer to 400. A few numbers on each sheet end in 50 and go up.
  • Which two hundreds is a 3-digit number between? The step before rounding: pupils write the hundred just below and the hundred just above, as in 700 < 748 < 800, then circle the closer one. Ten lines, no halfway numbers, and the key names the closer hundred.

4-digit and 5-digit numbers 3

  • Nearest hundred with no halfway numbers: 4 digits Four-digit numbers, where the thousands digit stays and only the hundreds can change: 7,482 rounds to 7,500 and 1,348 rounds to 1,300. Twenty numbers, none ending in 50.
  • Round 5-digit numbers to the nearest hundred Twenty numbers such as 70,492, which rounds to 70,500, and 84,856, which rounds to 84,900. Two digits stay untouched in front, so pupils have to find the hundreds place before they look at the tens.
  • Which two hundreds is a 4-digit number between? Pupils write the two neighbors and circle the closer one: 5,100 < 5,106 < 5,200, closer to 5,100. Ten lines. Naming the hundreds on either side of 5,106 is harder than it looks, because of the 0.

Ten and hundred side by side 1

  • One 4-digit number, nearest ten and nearest hundred Each line rounds one number twice: 5,973 is 5,970 to the nearest ten and 6,000 to the nearest hundred. Ten lines. The two answers usually differ, and each starts again from the number itself, not from the other answer.

Round to the nearest hundred to estimate 2

  • Estimate a 3-digit difference by rounding to the nearest hundred The same check for subtraction: 689 − 246 is about 700 − 200 = 500, and 689 − 246 = 443. Six problems in boxes. The larger number is 401 or more and the smaller one is below 400, so no answer goes below zero.
  • Estimate a sum past 1,000 by rounding to the nearest hundred Round both numbers, add the hundreds, then work out the exact sum and compare: 589 + 592 is about 600 + 600 = 1,200, and 589 + 592 = 1,181. Six problems in boxes, every sum above 1,000.

How this list was compiled: Our own list of sheet types, written on 2026-10-01. Every number is made by the tool when the sheet is made, and the key rounds it with whole-number arithmetic. Sheets of every type were made and each answer was rounded again by a separate program; the worked examples in this list were checked twice. A number exactly halfway between two hundreds, such as 250, is rounded up. That is a convention: Wikipedia, Rounding, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rounding, read 2026-10-01, describes sending a half up as a commonly taught rule for breaking ties. Where rounding sits in school was read on 2026-10-01 in the full text of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (California Department of Education copy, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf): 3.NBT.1 (use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100) and 4.NBT.3 (round multi-digit whole numbers to any place); and in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for mathematics (https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/ch111a.pdf): grade 3, 2(C), represent a number on a number line as being between two consecutive multiples of 10, 100, 1,000 or 10,000 and use words to describe relative size of numbers in order to round whole numbers; grade 4, 2(D), round whole numbers to a given place value through the hundred thousands place.
