A spelling list for words with oo, by sound

List 1 (moon, drool, boost) and List 2 (goose, brood, spoof) are short words. List 3 ends in oo or oon, or builds on such a word (balloon, kazoo, cartoonist), and List 4 has longer words (toothpick, zookeeper). List 5 starts the book sound (look, rook, crooked), List 6 joins two words (football, scrapbook, plywood) and List 7 runs to neighborhood and woodpecker.

  • Shoo and shoe sound the same. The sentence about flies tells the child which one to write.

Questions and answers

What are oo spelling pattern words?

Words in which the two letters oo spell one vowel sound. On this page that is the long sound of moon, boost and balloon, or the short sound of book, foot and childhood.

Are there spelling words with oo sound but other letters?

Yes. The long sound of moon is also spelled ew in grew, ue in blue and u with a silent e in flute. Those spellings are on the oo worksheets page; this page keeps to the letters oo.

Why are room, roof and root missing?

The dictionary gives each of them both sounds, the oo of moon and the oo of book, so they belong to neither half. Hoof is left off for the same reason, and spoonful has one of each sound.
