How this second grade spelling words list is built

Lists 1 to 11 are vowel teams and r-controlled vowels: ai and ay, igh, oi and oy, ar, er, air. Lists 12 to 16 turn to consonants: blends, tch, soft c and g, silent letters in know and lamb. Lists 17 to 21 add endings, plurals, contractions and compounds. Lists 22 to 25 hold the odd ones: bread, mother, could, Wednesday. The grade is our suggestion: change any word or sentence under Edit this list.

How the 2nd grade spelling test marks sound-alikes

Week and weak, road and rode, pair and pear sound the same, so a sentence follows each word, such as There are seven days in a week. Type the word and press Enter, or tap Next word. Type the sound-alike and the results say so.

  • In List 1, ai sits mid-word (train), ay at the end (stay). List 8 repeats that with oi and oy.
  • Wednesday began as Woden's day in Old English, hence its first d.
  • Capitals count, under Voice, speed and marking, starts ticked, so Monday and I'm need capitals. Apostrophes always count.
