Addition to 10 Worksheets: Missing Addends and Ways to Make a Total

Press Make a new sheet for new missing addends, or pick a total to make under Sheet type, then Print.

20 problems. Missing addend within 10: 3 + ___ = 7. Sheet DV4BBE, with its answer key.

How it works

These addition to 10 worksheets leave one addend out, as in 3 + ___ = 7. A second kind of sheet asks for every pair that makes one total, from 5 up to 10.

Missing addend first

The opening sheet has twenty sums of 10 or less with the blank in either place. Pupils count on from the number they have. Among adding to 10 worksheets these come a step after plain facts, because the answer is a part and not the total. Missing addend within 5: 2 + ___ = 5 is the easier start.

Every way to make a total

Ways to make 7: every pair once prints 0 + ___ = 7 through 7 + ___ = 7 in mixed order, eight lines for eight pairs. Each total from 5 to 10 has its own sheet. Used as addition within 10 worksheets, they show that 3 + 4 and 4 + 3 are both on the list.

  • Give counters or a ten frame for the first sheet, then take them away.
  • Common Core K.OA.3 has kindergartners break numbers to 10 into pairs in more than one way; 1.OA.6 asks grade 1 for fluency within 10.

Questions and answers

Where is the plain drill among add within 10 worksheets?

On the single digit addition page, which prints a + b facts with the total blank, and on the kindergarten page, which adds pictures. This page keeps to missing addends and ways to make a total; one sheet mixes plain facts in.

Is every adding within 10 worksheet printed with answers?

Yes. The answer key prints as the last page with each blank filled in. To print the problems alone, untick Answer key before you press Print.

Are these addition 1 10 worksheets right for kindergarten?

The sheets within 5 and the ways to make 5 suit kindergarten, where pupils first break numbers into pairs. The sheets up to 10 follow in grade 1. No grade is printed on the paper.

How do I save addition facts to 10 worksheets PDF files?

Press Print and choose Save as PDF as the printer. The sheet and its answer key are saved together, the key on a page of its own.

Missing addend 4

  • The first number is missing: ___ + 4 = 9 Every blank comes first, as in the title. Counting on does not work as easily here, so pupils think back from the total, 9 take away 4, and write 5 + 4 = 9.
  • Missing addend with a zero: 6 + ___ = 6 Each problem has a zero in it somewhere, as the missing number or as the one printed: 6 + ___ = 6, 0 + ___ = 4. Adding zero changes nothing, so 6 + 0 = 6 and 0 + 7 = 7.
  • Missing addend within 5: 2 + ___ = 5 Sums of 5 or less, zero included: 2 + ___ = 5, 5 + ___ = 5, or the first number left out. The sheet holds each of the 21 number pairs once, so 2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5 are both asked.
  • Missing addend within 10: 3 + ___ = 7 Twenty sums of 10 or less with one addend left out, the blank in either place: 3 + ___ = 7 or ___ + 4 = 9. Pupils count on from the number they have. The answers are 3 + 4 = 7 and 5 + 4 = 9.

Ways to make a total, 5 to 10 7

  • Ways to make 5: every pair once A first list, six lines: 0 + ___ = 5 up to 5 + ___ = 5, in mixed order. Pupils find that 2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5 are both there, and that 0 + 5 = 5 counts too.
  • Ways to make 6: every pair once Seven lines for seven pairs, from 0 + ___ = 6 to 6 + ___ = 6. The middle pair is a double, 3 + 3 = 6, and every other pair appears both ways round, such as 2 + 4 = 6 and 4 + 2 = 6.
  • Ways to make 7: every pair once Eight lines, 0 + ___ = 7 to 7 + ___ = 7, in mixed order. Seven has no double, so every pair has a partner: 3 + 4 = 7 and 4 + 3 = 7, 1 + 6 = 7 and 6 + 1 = 7.
  • Ways to make 8, 9 and 10 on one sheet Thirty lines: every pair for 8, for 9 and for 10, mixed together, such as 4 + ___ = 9 and 3 + ___ = 10. Pupils look at the total first, then find the partner: 4 + 5 = 9, 3 + 7 = 10.
  • Ways to make 8: every pair once Nine lines from 0 + ___ = 8 to 8 + ___ = 8. The double 4 + 4 = 8 sits in the middle of the list, with 3 + 5 = 8 on one side and 5 + 3 = 8 on the other.
  • Ways to make 9: every pair once Ten lines, 0 + ___ = 9 to 9 + ___ = 9. Pupils who know 4 + 5 = 9 get 5 + 4 = 9 for free, and the same goes for each of the five pairs of partners.
  • Ways to make 10: every pair once All eleven ways, 0 + ___ = 10 to 10 + ___ = 10, in mixed order: 1 + 9 = 10, 2 + 8 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10, 4 + 6 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10 and their partners. Later sums that cross a ten lean on these pairs.

Mixed forms, a ten frame and stories 4

  • Add or subtract to find it: 9 + ___ = 10, 10 − 6 = ___ A missing addend and a subtraction ask the same thing. 9 + ___ = 10 and 10 − 9 = ___ both have the answer 1. Half the lines are written each way, so pupils see that 10 − 6 = 4 because 6 + 4 = 10.
  • Fill the ten frame: how many more make 10? A ten frame shows some dark counters and the rest empty: 8 counters and 2 empty squares, with 8 + ___ = 10 under it. Pupils count the empty squares and write 8 + 2 = 10.
  • Missing addend stories within 10 Six short stories where a part is unknown: a jar holds 4 stickers, some more go in, and now there are 7. How many went in? Pupils write the number and the key adds 4 + 3 = 7.
  • Plain facts and missing addends mixed Three forms on one sheet: the total blank, the second number blank, as in 4 + ___ = 9, or the first number blank. Half the lines are plain facts. Pupils look for the blank before they answer: 8 + 2 = 10, 4 + 5 = 9.

How this list was compiled: The sheet types and worked examples were written for this page; every sum is made by the sheet generator and every worked example was computed by script on 2026-10-01. Where these sums sit in school was read in the full text of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (California Department of Education copy, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf), read on 2026-10-01: K.OA.3 has kindergartners decompose numbers of 10 or less into pairs in more than one way, K.OA.5 asks for fluency within 5, and 1.OA.6 for fluency within 10 in grade 1.
