Addition With Regrouping Worksheets: Pick the Column That Carries

Press Make a new sheet for new sums, or pick which column regroups under Sheet type, then Print.

12 problems. 2-digit: regroup the ones, carry box over the tens. Sheet C2XTTA, with its answer key.

How it works

Every sum on these addition with regrouping worksheets stands in columns under empty carry boxes. Each sheet names the column that regroups: the ones, the tens, both, or none at all.

Pick the column that regroups

The opening sheet regroups the ones: in 47 + 38, 7 + 8 = 15 puts a 1 in the box over the tens. 3-digit: regroup the tens only carries into the hundreds, and 3-digit: regroup twice, two boxes to fill does both. Most addition worksheets with regrouping mix the carries; here each sheet keeps to one kind.

With, without, or both on one sheet

For adding with and without regrouping worksheets, choose With and without regrouping mixed, 3-digit. The boxes print over every column but the ones, used or not, so they never show which sum needs one.

  • Have pupils say the ones total aloud: 15 is 1 ten and 5 ones, so 5 goes below and 1 goes in the box.
  • Common Core 2.NBT.7 has grade 2 compose tens and hundreds within 1,000; 3.NBT.2 asks grade 3 for fluency.

Questions and answers

Are addition with renaming worksheets the same thing?

If your school says renaming or carrying where this page says regrouping, these are the sheets. A column that adds up to 10 or more sends a 1 to the next column. Wikipedia calls that 1 a carry; Common Core calls it composing a ten.

Do you have addition worksheets without carrying?

Yes. Two sheets under Sheet type have no regrouping at all, one with 2-digit and one with 3-digit numbers. The carry boxes still print and stay empty, so the page looks like the sheets that follow it.

Is this an adding with regrouping worksheet with answers?

Yes. The answer key prints as the last page and shows every carried digit in its box. To print the sums alone, untick Answer key before you press Print.

Where are addition with carrying worksheets for bigger numbers?

Under Sheet type, in the 4-digit group. One sheet has one to three regroupings in a sum, and the other carries out of the ones, the tens and the hundreds every time.

Are these regrouping math worksheets only for addition?

Yes, every sheet here adds. In subtraction a ten is taken apart, not made, and that has its own page of sheets.

All 17 sheet types

2-digit numbers 4

  • 2-digit plus 1-digit: the ones make a new ten 68 + 7: 8 + 7 = 15 ones, which is 1 ten and 5 ones. The 1 goes in the box and 68 + 7 = 75. A first regrouping sheet, because only one number has tens.
  • 2-digit sums past 100: regroup the tens only 74 + 53: the ones make 7, with nothing to carry. The tens make 7 + 5 = 12, so 2 goes under the tens and 1 moves into the hundreds: 74 + 53 = 127. No sum on the sheet regroups its ones.
  • 2-digit: regroup the ones and the tens 86 + 57: 6 + 7 = 13 ones, so write 3 and put 1 in the box. Then 1 + 8 + 5 = 14 tens, which is 1 hundred and 4 tens: 86 + 57 = 143. Two regroupings in every sum.
  • 2-digit: regroup the ones, carry box over the tens 47 + 38: the ones make 7 + 8 = 15, so 5 goes under the line and 1 goes in the box over the tens. Then 1 + 4 + 3 = 8 tens, and 47 + 38 = 85. Every sum on the sheet regroups the ones and stays under 100.

3-digit numbers 5

  • 3-digit plus 2-digit: line up the ones, then regroup 584 + 36: the 3 of 36 stands under the 8, not under the 5. Then 4 + 6 = 10, write 0 and carry 1, and 1 + 8 + 3 = 12 tens, write 2 and carry 1: 584 + 36 = 620.
  • 3-digit: regroup the ones only 346 + 228: 6 + 8 = 14, so 4 goes under the ones and 1 goes in the box over the tens. Tens and hundreds add with nothing more to carry: 346 + 228 = 574. The box over the hundreds stays empty.
  • 3-digit: regroup the tens only 472 + 265: the ones make 7. The tens make 7 + 6 = 13, so 3 goes under the tens and 1 goes in the box over the hundreds: 472 + 265 = 737. Here the box over the tens stays empty.
  • 3-digit: regroup twice, two boxes to fill 358 + 277: 8 + 7 = 15, write 5 and carry 1. Then 1 + 5 + 7 = 13 tens, write 3 and carry 1. Then 1 + 3 + 2 = 6 hundreds: 358 + 277 = 635. Both boxes are used in every sum.
  • 3-digit: the hundreds regroup into a thousand 813 + 763: ones and tens add with nothing to carry, and the hundreds make 8 + 7 = 15. That is 1 thousand and 5 hundreds, so 813 + 763 = 1,576 and the answer has four digits.

4-digit numbers and three addends 3

  • 4-digit: one, two or three regroupings in a sum 2,643 + 5,368 regroups three times and makes 8,011; 4,215 + 3,528 regroups only the ones and makes 7,743. The sheet mixes the two kinds, so pupils check each column as they reach it.
  • 4-digit: regroup in the ones, tens and hundreds 1,898 + 5,859: 8 + 9 = 17, then 1 + 9 + 5 = 15, then 1 + 8 + 8 = 17, then 1 + 1 + 5 = 7. All three boxes fill and 1,898 + 5,859 = 7,757. The longest chain of carries on this page.
  • Three 2-digit numbers in a column, with regrouping 27 + 28 + 30: the ones make 7 + 8 + 0 = 15, so 5 goes below and 1 goes in the box. The tens make 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 = 8, and 27 + 28 + 30 = 85. With three addends the ones can also pass 20.

Without regrouping, mixed and checked 5

  • 3-digit with regrouping, key checks by subtracting The key adds a check line under each answer: 415 + 328 = 743, and 743 − 328 = 415 brings back the first number. Every sum regroups at least once. Pupils can write the same check on the back.
  • With and without regrouping mixed, 2-digit to 99 34 + 25 = 59 has nothing to carry, and 57 + 34 = 91 does, because 7 + 4 = 11. Some sums on the sheet regroup the ones and the rest do not. No sum passes 99, so the tens never carry.
  • With and without regrouping mixed, 3-digit 223 + 153 = 376 needs no regrouping, and 211 + 298 = 509 carries from the tens. Both kinds are on the sheet in no set order, so pupils must add each column before they know if a box is needed.
  • Without regrouping, 2-digit: the box stays empty 52 + 36: 2 + 6 = 8 ones and 5 + 3 = 8 tens, so 52 + 36 = 88. No column reaches 10, and the carry box over the tens is printed but never used. A warm-up before the first regrouping sheet.
  • Without regrouping, 3-digit: both boxes stay empty 252 + 441: 2 + 1 = 3, 5 + 4 = 9, 2 + 4 = 6, so 252 + 441 = 693. Every column makes 9 or less. Pupils learn the right-to-left order here, before a carry is added to it.

How this list was compiled: The sheet types and worked examples were written for this page; every sum is made by the sheet generator and every worked example was computed by script on 2026-10-01. Where regrouping sits in school was read in the full text of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (California Department of Education copy, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf), read on 2026-10-01: 2.NBT.7 has grade 2 add within 1,000 and says it is sometimes necessary to compose tens or hundreds, and 3.NBT.2 asks grade 3 to add and subtract within 1,000 fluently.
