Late work and make-up work

Five rules on a sheet of their own: due dates are posted a week ahead; work is due when class begins; late work is accepted for one week; an absence gives one extra day for each day out; ask for more time before the due date.

Rules for discussion

Six rules for a seminar: talk to the group, not just the teacher; point to the text when you make a claim; disagree with the idea, not the person; let three others speak before you speak again; ask a question before you argue back; no side talk while someone is speaking.

Questions and answers

What are good class rules for high school?

Ones a student can act on without asking what they mean. Phones stay put away during class says more than Be responsible. State each rule as what to do and keep the list to one page.

What should class rules in a syllabus cover?

The things students ask about in the first week: attendance and tardies, phones, materials, late work, make-up work, academic honesty, respect and how to get help. Those are the eight headings of the rules by topic sheet.

Is there a page for students and parents to sign?

Yes. The opening page ends with signature lines, and the syllabus signature slips print two to a page, with a box for initials beside each policy, so they can come back without the rules attached.

Do these class rules match my school's handbook?

Not unless you make them. They are our own wording, and a school's attendance, phone and grading policies come first. Check each line against the handbook and type over any that differs.
