Three levels, from nut to sassafras
Level 1, about first grade, has short words (mud, elm), long vowels (rake, geese) and two consonants together (frost, twig). Level 2, about second to fourth grade, has two syllables (cider, willow), compound words (cornfield, chalkboard) and endings (raked, drifting). Level 3, fifth grade and up, has the calendar and school (semester, equinox), animals and trees (hibernate, sycamore) and colors (auburn, russet). The grades are only our suggestion.
Two months with a capital
September and October are in List 7. The Capitals count box starts checked, so october with a small o is marked wrong; uncheck it under Voice, speed and marking to let small letters pass.
- Autumnal keeps the silent n of autumn and lets you hear it.
- Deciduous has two u's: de-cid-u-ous.
Questions and answers
Do these work as September spelling words?
Yes. School words run through the levels: bus in List 1, notebook and chalkboard in List 5, and classmates, semester, schedule and the word September itself in List 7.
Which are the October spelling words?
List 7 has October and equinox, and the leaf words fit the month: rustling, crackling, auburn, russet and goldenrod. Pumpkins and costumes are on our Halloween list, which shares no word with this one.
Are these autumn spelling words too?
Yes, fall and autumn name the same season. Autumnal is in List 7; autumn itself is on our Halloween list, where its silent n is the lesson.
Is there a fall spelling word list 1st grade classes can use?
Level 1: thirty short words in Lists 1 to 3, such as nut, leaf and frost. The grade is only our suggestion, and Edit this list changes any word.
