Short vowels with blends, list by list
List 1 is short a (slap, ramp, flask), List 2 short e (crest, yelp), List 3 short i (grip, film), List 4 short o (plot, frond) and List 5 short u (snug, tusk). Each word keeps the CVC shape with one extra consonant, so a child who reads cot can try clot next.
Three sheets and a spoken test
Word list prints the open list with a sentence under each word. Test sheet has numbered lines and a last page for the grown-up who reads aloud; ABC order and Missing letters come from the same words. Start test says each word, its sentence, then the word again.
- Have the child tap one finger per sound: blast is five taps, b, l, a, s, t.
Questions and answers
What are CVC words with blends called?
CCVC words when the blend comes first (flat, grip), CVCC when it comes last (camp, lift), and CCVCC when there is one at each end (blast, crest). All keep one short vowel.
What is the difference between a blend and a digraph?
In a blend you still hear each letter: s and l in slim. In a digraph two letters make one new sound: sh in shell. Our ch, sh and th list has the digraphs.
Why are band, mist and sent left out?
Each sounds the same as another word: banned, missed and cent. The test reads a sentence with every word, but these lists skip such pairs so no answer is marked wrong.
