Six sets: three runs of nine, vowels, tricky names, digraphs

Show only deals one set. A to I, J to Q and R to Z hold nine letters each, with Ñ after N. Vowels has five cards. Names that trip English speakers gathers G, J, H, V, W, Y and Z: ge, jota, hache, uve, uve doble, ye and zeta. Digraphs holds ch, ll, gu, qu and rr, pairs of letters written for one sound.

Print the cards

Each set fits one sheet of Letter or A4; all 32 cards take three. Press the print button under the card, then print on both sides and flip on the long edge. The backs are mirrored, so hache lands behind Spanish: H h.

  • Quiz mode ignores accents and the tilde, so it cannot tell eñe from ene. Check Ñ and N by eye.
  • Other names are in use too: ve for V, doble ve or doble u for W and i griega for Y. Quiz mode takes them.

Questions and answers

How many letters are in the Spanish alphabet?

Twenty-seven: the 26 letters English uses plus ñ, as the Real Academia Española lists them. Ch and ll were once counted as letters. Today they are digraphs, pairs of letters, and not part of the alphabet.

What is ñ called in Spanish?

Eñe. It is a letter of its own, not an n with an accent, and it comes right after n in the alphabet.

What are W and Y called in Spanish?

W is uve doble and Y is ye. Other names are still heard: doble ve or doble u for W, and i griega for Y.

Is h silent in Spanish?

Yes, in nearly every word: hoja, the word on the H card, starts with the sound o. In a few borrowed words, such as hámster, the h is sounded.
