Whole numbers 10

  • Blank place value chart to millions, no labels Seven empty columns with empty heading boxes and a heavier line where each comma goes. Pupils write Millions to Ones in the boxes before they write a number. A quick check of who knows the order of the places.
  • Hundreds, tens and ones place value chart Three columns. 305 goes in as 3 hundreds, 0 tens and 5 ones. The zero holds the tens place open, so the number is 300 + 5 and not 35. The 2nd grade chart.
  • Place value chart to billions Ten columns, Billions to Ones. 7,040,300,256 has 7 billions, 0 hundred millions and 4 ten millions. In the United States a billion is a thousand millions, a 1 followed by 9 zeros.
  • Place value chart to hundred billions Twelve columns in four periods: Billions, Millions, Thousands, Ones. 125,600,048,903 reads one hundred twenty-five billion, six hundred million, forty-eight thousand, nine hundred three.
  • Place value chart to hundred millions Nine columns in three full periods: Millions, Thousands, Ones. 306,415,092 reads three hundred six million, four hundred fifteen thousand, ninety-two. It prints sideways, so each column keeps room for a digit.

Whole numbers, continued

  • Place value chart to hundred thousands Six columns under two period names, Thousands and Ones, each with its own hundreds, tens and ones. 640,319 reads six hundred forty thousand, three hundred nineteen. The Common Core standards for 4th grade stop at 1,000,000, so this chart holds every 4th grade number but the last.
  • Place value chart to millions Seven columns, Millions to Ones. 5,204,870 is 5,000,000 + 200,000 + 4,000 + 800 + 70. Millions is the first place of a new period, so the number takes a second comma.
  • Place value chart to ten thousands Five columns. 27,508 is 2 ten thousands, 7 thousands, 5 hundreds, 0 tens and 8 ones. Read the two digits left of the comma as one number: twenty-seven thousand.
  • Place value chart to the thousands Four columns: Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones. 4,062 is 4 thousands, 0 hundreds, 6 tens and 2 ones, or 4,000 + 60 + 2. The comma in 4,062 sits on the line between Thousands and Hundreds.
  • Tens and ones chart Two columns, Tens and Ones. 47 goes in as 4 tens and 7 ones, which is 40 + 7. The first place value chart for 1st grade, where every number to 99 is some tens and some ones.

Decimals 7

  • Blank place value chart with decimals, no labels Seven empty columns, a decimal point printed after the fourth, and empty heading boxes. Pupils name the places outward from the point: ones, then tens, to the left; tenths, then hundredths, to the right.
  • Ones to thousandths decimal chart Ones, the decimal point, Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths, in wide columns. 0.305 is 3 tenths, 0 hundredths and 5 thousandths: three hundred five thousandths. For numbers smaller than 1.
  • Place value chart from millions to thousandths Ten places and the decimal point, sideways on the sheet. 3,526,417.968 fills every column. For 5th grade, when whole numbers and decimals share one chart.
  • Place value chart to hundredths Hundreds, Tens, Ones, the decimal point, Tenths, Hundredths. 208.75 is 200 + 8 + 0.7 + 0.05 and reads two hundred eight and seventy-five hundredths. In class the word and is kept for the point.
  • Place value chart to thousandths Thousands to Thousandths with the decimal point between Ones and Tenths. 2,146.305 has a 0 in the hundredths, so the 5 stays in the thousandths. The Common Core standards for 5th grade read decimals to thousandths.
  • Place value chart with decimals to tenths Tens, Ones, a narrow decimal point column, then Tenths. 36.4 is 3 tens, 6 ones and 4 tenths: thirty-six and four tenths. The point has its own column, so no digit is ever written in it.
  • Place value chart with times 10 arrows Thousands to Thousandths with the value of each place under its name: 1,000, 100, 10, 1, 0.1, 0.01, 0.001. Arrows show that one step left is 10 times as much and one step right is one tenth as much.

Money 2

  • Dollars, dimes and pennies chart Three columns and the decimal point, for amounts under $10. $3.47 is 3 dollars, 4 dimes and 7 pennies. A bridge from coins to tenths and hundredths, before the word decimal comes up.
  • Money place value chart Hundreds, Tens, Ones, the decimal point, Dimes, Pennies, with a dollar sign before the first column. $245.36 is 2 hundred-dollar bills, 4 tens, 5 ones, 3 dimes and 6 pennies. A dime is a tenth of a dollar and a penny is a hundredth.

Mats for blocks and disks 5

  • Decimal place value disks mat Tens, Ones, the decimal point, Tenths and Hundredths as tall columns. 14.27 is 1 tens disk, 4 ones disks, 2 tenths disks and 7 hundredths disks. Ten hundredths disks trade for one tenths disk.
  • Hundreds, tens and ones place value mat Three tall columns for flats, rods and unit cubes. 126 is 1 flat, 2 rods and 6 cubes. It prints sideways, so the Hundreds column has room for flats.
  • Place value disks mat to millions Seven tall columns, sideways on the sheet. 1,203,000 takes only 6 disks and leaves four columns empty. Ten disks in any column are traded for one disk in the column to its left.
  • Place value disks mat to thousands Four tall columns for place value disks marked 1,000, 100, 10 and 1. 3,052 is 3 thousands disks, no hundreds disks, 5 tens disks and 2 ones disks. An empty column is how a zero looks.
  • Tens and ones place value mat One chart fills the sheet: two tall columns with room to lay ten rods under Tens and unit cubes under Ones. 34 is 3 rods and 4 cubes. Ten cubes in the Ones column are traded for 1 rod.

Digit cards and disks to cut out 4

  • Decimal place value disks Ten disks each of 1, 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001. Ten 0.1 disks make 1, and ten 0.01 disks make 0.1. They pair with the decimal disks mat.
  • Digit cards 0 to 9 Two sets of the digits 0 to 9, a decimal point card and two comma cards, with cut lines. Deal four cards and ask for the largest number they make on a thousands chart.
  • Place value disks 1 to 1,000 Ten disks each of 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 to cut out, with the value printed on every disk. Nine of a value is the most any number needs. The tenth is for trading up.
  • Place value disks to 1,000,000 Disks for all seven values from 1 to 1,000,000, ten of each, to cut out for the millions mat. Keep each value in its own envelope.

Four small charts to a sheet 4

  • Hundreds, tens and ones charts, four to a sheet Four small three-column charts on one sheet. Cut them apart for an exit ticket: say a number such as 590, and each pupil writes it in the chart and hands it in.
  • Hundredths place value charts, four to a sheet Four small charts from Tens to Hundredths with the decimal point column. Made for comparing two decimals, such as 4.5 and 4.45, one above the other with the points lined up.
  • Tens and ones charts, four to a sheet Four small tens and ones charts with cut lines: one for each pupil at a table, or one to glue beside each problem in a math notebook.
  • Thousands place value charts, four to a sheet Four small charts with Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones. Each has a few rows, enough to line up an addition or subtraction problem by place.

With expanded form and word form lines 4

  • Decimal place value chart with expanded form lines A row from Hundreds to Thousandths and lines for the three forms. The example in the Common Core standards is 347.392, written 3 × 100 + 4 × 10 + 7 × 1 + 3 × (1/10) + 9 × (1/100) + 2 × (1/1000).
  • Millions place value chart with expanded form lines A seven-column row and long lines for the three forms. 2,350,006 is 2,000,000 + 300,000 + 50,000 + 6, two million, three hundred fifty thousand, six.
  • Thousands place value chart with expanded form lines One chart row to the thousands with three writing lines under it. 6,047 is 6,000 + 40 + 7, six thousand, forty-seven. The skipped hundreds place is the point of the exercise.
  • Three-digit place value chart with expanded form lines A Hundreds, Tens, Ones row, then lines for standard form, expanded form and word form. 582 is 500 + 80 + 2, five hundred eighty-two. Several sets fit on a sheet.

How this list was compiled: Own work. The worked number on every chart was checked two ways: its parts add back to the number, and its word form reads back to the same number. Place names, the 10 times rule, the 1,000,000 limit for 4th grade and decimals to thousandths in 5th grade were read in the full text of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in September 2026. How it works

A place value chart gives every digit its own column, so 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones. This page opens on a blank tens and ones chart. The Sheet menu runs to billions, thousandths, money and mats for disks.

Pick the chart by grade

For 1st grade print the tens and ones chart, and for 2nd the hundreds place value chart. For 3rd graders a ones, tens, hundreds, thousands chart is enough. 4th grade runs up to hundred thousands and stops at 1,000,000. For 5th graders add the decimal point and thousandths.

Read a big number by periods

Past the thousands, columns sit in periods of three: Ones, Thousands, Millions, Billions. A comma stands between periods. Read each period as a small number, then say its name.

Use it with blocks or a marker

A place value mat, printable under Mats for blocks and disks, has tall columns to lay base ten blocks in. For a wipe-off chart, set Line weight to Heavy in More options and use a page protector.

  • Every place is worth 10 times the place to its right, so a digit moved one column left is multiplied by 10.
  • There is no oneths place. The names mirror around the ones: tens pair with tenths, hundreds with hundredths.
  • In class, keep the word and for the decimal point: 208.75 is two hundred eight and seventy-five hundredths.

Questions and answers

What is a tens and ones place value chart?

It is a two-column chart headed Tens and Ones. A two-digit number goes in one digit to a column, so 47 shows as 4 tens and 7 ones, or 40 + 7. It is the first chart in the Sheet menu.

How do I get a free place value chart with decimals as a PDF?

Choose a chart under Decimals, such as the place value chart to thousandths, press Print this sheet and pick Save as PDF as the printer. The place value chart to millions saves as a PDF the same way.

Is there a place value chart up to millions and past it?

Yes. The place value chart through millions has seven columns, and three wider charts run to hundred millions, billions and hundred billions. In the United States a billion is a thousand millions, so Billions is the fourth period.

What is a money place value chart?

It is a decimal chart with money names on the columns: hundreds, tens and ones for dollar bills, then dimes and pennies after the point. A dime is a tenth of a dollar and a penny is a hundredth.

Is a place value chart for whole numbers different from one with decimals?

Only to the right of the ones. A whole number chart ends at Ones. A blank place value chart with decimals adds a decimal point column, then tenths, hundredths and thousandths, each one tenth of the place before it.
