How it works
This Gujarati alphabet chart prints 13 vowels, અ to ઋ, and the 36 consonants, ક to જ્ઞ, in order. Beside each letter is its spelling in Latin letters: a for અ, ka for ક.

Five rows of five
The first 25 consonants are learned in five rows of five, ક ખ ગ ઘ ઙ first. Each row is made in one part of the mouth, from the back of it to the lips. Nine more letters follow, ય to ળ, then ક્ષ and જ્ઞ.
A vowel inside every consonant
A consonant alone already carries the vowel a, so ક reads ka. Any other vowel is written as a sign joined to the consonant: કા is kā, કિ is ki, કુ is ku.
- A line over a vowel marks the long one of a pair: a and ā, i and ī.
- A dot under a letter, as in ṭ, ḍ and ṇ, marks a sound made with the tongue curled back.
- Two more vowel letters, ઍ and ઑ, write vowel sounds of English words. The chart leaves them out.
