Five letters of its own
Ă and  follow A, Î follows I, Ș follows S and Ț follows T. Ă sounds like the a of above, ș like the sh of shopping and ț like the ts of cats.
More than one name
The chart prints the first name of each letter: be, ce, de. Most consonants have a second name that ends in î, such as bî and cî. Q is kü in the 2009 edition of the Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language and chiu in the 1996 edition, so its row has both.
- Only words taken from other languages use K, Q, W or Y. Q, W and Y joined the alphabet in 1982.
- The mark under ș and ț is a comma. The Romanian Academy counts the same letters with a cedilla as incorrect.
