Pick the scale first
At 1/4 inch to the foot, a ratio of 1:48, the Letter sheet holds a plan of 28 by 40 feet. At 1/8 inch to the foot, 1:96, it holds 56 by 80 feet. The metric sheet at 1:100 holds 25 by 19 meters on Letter and 27 by 18 on A4.
Room layout graph paper
The 1/2 inch sheet gives one room of 20 by 14 feet, with a heavy line every 2 feet. Cut the furniture out of a second sheet at the same scale and move the pieces around the plan.
- Write the scale on the plan, for example 1/4 inch = 1 foot, and check one printed square with a ruler before you draw.
Questions and answers
What scale is graph paper for house plans drawn at?
Architect's scales in the United States include 1/4 inch to the foot, a ratio of 1:48, and 1/8 inch to the foot, 1:96. Metric architect's scale rulers include 1:50 and 1:100. These sheets put one square on one foot, or on half a meter.
Does it work as graph paper for kitchen planning?
Yes. On the 1/2 inch sheet one square is one foot, so a cabinet you measured at 2 feet deep is 2 squares. Measure the room, mark the doors and windows, then draw everything to the same scale.
How large a plan fits on one sheet?
On Letter, 28 by 40 feet at 1/4 inch to the foot and 56 by 80 feet at 1/8 inch. The 11 x 17 sheet holds 128 by 80 feet at 1/8 inch, and A3 holds 120 by 80.
