How this list was compiled: Written for this page. In the first set a sentence is followed by a line that asks for the opposite of one of its words, and one of three choices is its antonym; the other two are a word of similar meaning and a word that has nothing to do with it. In the second set a sentence uses two words, and the sheet asks whether they are synonyms or antonyms. Every antonym pair in the bank is recorded as a pair of antonyms in WordNet 3.1, the dictionary database of Princeton University (wordnet.princeton.edu), and every synonym pair shares a WordNet sense; both were read on 3 October 2026, and a pair found in neither way was left out. Relating words to their opposites (antonyms) and to words of similar meaning (synonyms) is L.4.5c in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, published at thecorestandards.org, read the same day. No person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

Questions and answers

What is an antonym?

An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning of another word: ascend and descend, generous and stingy, fresh and stale. Some pairs are made with a prefix, such as visible and invisible.

What grade learns antonyms?

The Common Core names antonyms in grade 4: students relate words to their opposites (antonyms) and to words with similar but not identical meanings (synonyms), L.4.5c. Kindergarten starts with opposites of common verbs and adjectives (L.K.5b).

Can I use these as 2nd grade antonyms worksheets?

Pairs such as easy and difficult or safe and dangerous suit 2nd and 3rd grade, and harder ones such as inferior and horizontal suit 5th. For kindergarten, and as antonym worksheets for 1st grade, the opposites matching page has pairs such as hot and cold.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The last page is the key, with the right choice circled under each sentence and written in where there is a blank. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
