How this list was compiled: Written for this page. Each sentence has one blank and three forms of the same noun: the singular possessive (dog's), the plural possessive (dogs') and the plain plural (dogs). In the first set a noun with one owner (a first name, a noun after a word such as a, one, this, that, each or every, or a first sentence that says the roof of the barn) takes an apostrophe and s, and it is mixed with sentences where nothing is owned and the plain plural is right (three cats slept on the porch). In the second set there are two or more owners: a noun after both or a number, a first sentence that says the nests of the robins, or one of six plurals that do not end in s (children, men, women, people, mice, geese), which add an apostrophe and s. No singular noun in the bank ends in s. The rule was read in the Wikipedia article English possessive on 3 October 2026; apostrophes for possessives are L.2.2c and forming possessives is L.3.2d in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, published at thecorestandards.org, read the same day. First names are ordinary ones; no real person, brand or character is named. Licence: own work

How it works

A possessive noun shows who or what owns something. The page opens on one owner (the cat's whiskers) mixed with plain plurals that own nothing (three cats). A second set has more than one owner.

Read the full guide

Dog's or dogs

That ___ whiskers twitched offers cat's, cats and cats'. That means one cat, and the whiskers are its own, so the answer is cat's. In Three ___ slept on the porch nothing is owned, so the answer is cats. First names work like cat's: Mia's bike. Some items give a first sentence, The roof of the barn leaks, and then ask for the barn's roof.

Plural possessive nouns

Under Set, pick More than one owner. A plural that ends in s adds only an apostrophe: both dogs' tails. A plural that does not end in s adds an apostrophe and s: the children's mittens, the mice's nest.

  • No singular noun on the sheets ends in s, so the bus's or bus' question does not come up.
  • Its and it's, and other contractions, are on the contractions page.

Questions and answers

What is a possessive noun?

A possessive noun shows ownership. A singular noun adds an apostrophe and s (the dog's bowl); a plural that ends in s adds only an apostrophe (the dogs' bowls).

What grade learns possessive nouns?

Grade 1 in the Common Core uses possessive nouns (L.1.1b), grade 2 uses an apostrophe to form frequently occurring possessives (L.2.2c), and grade 3 forms and uses possessives (L.3.2d).

Do these work as 3rd grade possessive nouns worksheets?

Yes. The plural set under Set, with children's and dogs', is the grade 3 skill and also serves as 4th grade possessive nouns worksheets. The opening set, dog's or dogs, suits 1st and 2nd grade. The grades are our suggestion.

Where does the apostrophe go in a plural possessive?

After the s when the plural ends in s: both teachers' smiles. Before the s when the plural does not end in s: the women's team, the people's votes.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The last page is the key, with the right choice circled under each sentence and written in where there is a blank. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
