How it works
An analogy says two pairs of words are related in the same way. Each line gives one pair and half of a second, with three words to choose from; one of them finishes it.

Name the relationship first
Say how the first two words go together, then make the second pair match. Painter is to brush: a worker and a tool, so writer is to pen. Damp is to soaked: the second word is stronger, so dusty is to filthy.
4th grade analogies worksheets and a harder set
Set picks one. Opposites, synonyms, parts is the grade 4 set: opposites, words that mean the same, and part and whole. Tools, causes, how strong asks for more thought. Left on All of them, a sheet mixes both.
- The wrong words usually go with the third word in another way, so check the relationship, not only the topic.
Questions and answers
What grade are analogies taught in?
The Common Core first names analogies in grade 7 (L.7.5b). Grades 4 and 5 work with the relationships these lines use: opposites and synonyms (L.4.5c) and the relationship between particular words (L.5.5c).
How do you solve an analogy?
Put the first pair in a short sentence, such as a page is part of a book, then use the same sentence for the second pair: a petal is part of a flower. The choice that fits is the answer.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The last page repeats the sheet with the right word circled and written in. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
Can I add my own analogies?
Yes. Type one a line with ___ for the blank, an equals sign, the right word, then a slash before each wrong one: Bird is to nest as bee is to ___. = hive / honey. Your lines replace ours.
