How it works

These crossword puzzles for 6th graders drill the subject words of a middle school year: math and science, social studies, and reading and writing. They are vocabulary crosswords that open with no word bank.

Three subjects

Math and Science has Unit rate, Absolute value, Convection and Watershed. Social Studies has Irrigation, Barter, Scarcity and Primary source. Reading and Writing has Claim, Evidence, Connotation and Central idea.

Print or solve

Print gives Letter or A4 with the answer key last. For a harder sheet, press Add another clue until the puzzle holds 15.

  • Give the Reading and Writing set before an essay unit; Claim, Evidence and Thesis are the words the rubric will use.

Questions and answers

How are these different from the 5th grade crosswords?

They share no answers. The 5th grade crossword holds word roots and figures of speech; this page holds the middle school words for rates, earth science, early civilizations, economics and argument writing.

Do the puzzles follow a state standard?

No standard is named. The words are the ones sixth grade textbooks commonly teach, and the grade is our suggestion, not a published standard.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Every print ends with the answer key on a sheet of its own, and Show all clues and answers, under the puzzle, lists all 60 clues with their answers.
