How it works

These 5th grade spelling words are 250 words in 25 lists of 10. Lists 1 to 11 are built on Latin roots (transport, interrupt, predict). Lists 12 to 24 cover vowels and endings the ear cannot settle (separate, necessary, government).

How the fifth grade spelling words use Latin roots

Each of Lists 1 to 11 pairs two Latin roots. Port means carry, so transport, import, export and portable all hold p-o-r-t. Rupt means break (erupt, interrupt), dict means say (predict, contradict) and scrib means write (describe, subscribe). Know the root and the hard middle of the word is already spelled.

Slippery vowels, and printable 5th grade spelling words

Said at normal speed, separate, chocolate, camera and favorite each lose a vowel. President and assistant end in the same sound, so the ending has to be learned by eye. Pick a sheet above the preview and press Print. ABC order, Missing letters and Multiple choice each end with an answer key.

  • Tractor comes from the Latin trahere, to pull. The same root sits in subtract, extract and distract in List 6.
  • Argument drops the e of argue. Government keeps the n of govern, which many speakers never say.
  • In Canada, favorite in List 12 becomes favourite, the only one of these grade 5 spelling words to change.
