How the seventh grade spelling words are grouped

List 1 words double two letters (embarrass, balloon). List 2 words double only one: parallel has a single r, vacuum a single c. List 3 is a memory trick: conscience holds science, sovereign holds reign, and lieutenant breaks into lie, u, ten, ant. Lists 6 to 8 sort endings that sound alike, so similar ends in ar and ancestor in or.

Sound-alike pairs in List 13

Both halves of every pair in List 13 are test words, so the sentence is the only clue: A tailor can alter the sleeves. Type each word and press Enter, or tap Next word. Type altar and the results name the word the sentence needed. List 12's pairs only look alike: angel and angle, device and devise.

  • Bookkeeper (List 1) has three double letters in a row: oo, kk, ee.
  • Mischievous is mischief plus ous: f turns to v and no i follows. Grievous, also in List 4, has none.
  • In List 12 affect is the verb (Lack of sleep can affect your mood), effect the noun (a calming effect).

Questions and answers

Can I print these lists as 7th grade spelling worksheets?

Yes. Above the sheet, pick ABC order, Missing letters or Multiple choice, then press Print. Each worksheet ends with an answer key page, and New version redraws it. Look a Multiple choice sheet over before you copy it.

Are these spelling words for 7th graders too easy or too hard?

Seventh grade is only our suggestion, and the lists vary on purpose. Lists 2 and 6 are the gentlest: career, similar. Lists 17 and 19 are the stiffest: onomatopoeia, cholesterol. Review test from several lists mixes 10 words from the lists you tick.

Why are science and math words on a 7th grade spelling list?

Because students write them in other classes. Lists 14 to 19 take one class each: cytoplasm, reciprocal, legislature, participle, inertia, cartilage. Where it can, the sentence defines the word: The reciprocal of two is one half.
