Pick the list that fits this week's phonics

Start from a list offers eight themes: Blends and Digraphs, Silent E Words, Vowel Teams, 1st Grade Sight Words, 1st Grade Math, Light, Sound and Sky, Plants and Animals, and My Community. Picking one puts 8 of its words in the list under the grid and renames the puzzle. The cross beside a word takes it away, to cut the hunt to 4 or 6 words for a child who tires.

A gentler start and a stretch

For a gentler start, pick 1st Grade Warm-Up: 21 words of 3 letters, such as zoo and paw. For a stretch, pick 1st Grade Challenge, 48 words of 5 to 6 letters; the grid grows by itself if the words need room. Both stay on Easy.

  • Tick Show clues, not words and read the clues aloud: children hear "A young horse" and hunt for foal.
  • Opening list clues name the pattern: frog "starts with the blend fr", and for tree, "The ee says its name".
  • 1st Grade Math holds clock and coin words: Clock, Hour, Minute, Penny, Nickel, Cent and Dollar.

Questions and answers

Is this a good word search for 6 year olds?

For a 6 year old who reads short words, yes: the 8 words have 3 to 5 letters and run across and down, never backwards or on a slant. For a child still learning letters, the kindergarten word search hides 6 words that never cross.

Why are the letters lowercase?

Most of what first graders read is in lowercase, so the grid and the word list match the words as children see them in books. Large print and Lower-case letters are both switches in More options, and turning one off keeps the same puzzle.

Can I use our own spelling words on the worksheet?

Yes. Type this week's list over the words under the grid, or paste it into the last place of the list, in capitals or lowercase; the grid shows them in lowercase. A word of up to 8 letters fits the 8 by 8 grid, and a longer one makes the grid grow.
