Steps of the Scientific Method 20

Analysis Inspecting the data to find useful information in it.
Background The information gathered on a topic before the testing begins.
Conclusion What is drawn from the data at the end; it can be the start of a new hypothesis.
Data The values and facts collected during a test.
Experiment A procedure carried out to support or refute a hypothesis.
Hypothesis A proposed explanation that can be tested; it begins as an educated guess.
Investigation A careful, organized search for the answer to a question.
Observation Noticing something and gathering information about it directly.
Prediction A statement about what will happen, made before the test is run.
Problem The thing an investigation sets out to solve or explain.
Procedure The ordered steps of a test, written so that someone else can repeat them.
Publish To make results public so that other scientists can check them.
Purpose The reason an investigation is done.
Question Where an investigation starts: what you want to find out.
Replication Running a study again to see whether the same results come out.
Report The written account of what was done and what was found.
Research Gathering what is already known before anything is tested.
Results What the data show once the test is over.
Retest To run the test again, a step often done by other scientists.
Revise To alter and amend a hypothesis after new data come in.

Baseline The starting conditions measured at the beginning, for comparison with later data.
Bias A lean for or against an idea that makes a result inaccurate or unfair.
Blind Describes a test in which information that could sway people is withheld until the end.
Causation One thing bringing about another, which a correlation alone cannot prove.
Cause An event that contributes to producing another event.
Confounding Distortion from an outside variable, a risk that controls are designed to reduce.
Control A part of a test designed to keep other variables from influencing the result.
Correlation A statistical relationship between two variables; alone it does not show cause.
Effect An event that is produced by a cause.
Factor Something that can affect the results of a test, whether it is studied or held constant.
Group The units in a test that all receive the same treatment.
Independent Describes the variable that the experimenter changes on purpose.
Manipulate What the experimenter does to one variable: change it on purpose.
Placebo A treatment made to look genuine that has no real effect.
Random Chosen by chance, with no pattern.
Reliable Describes a measure that gives similar results under the same conditions.
Sample A subset chosen from a larger population to stand for the whole.
Subject A person who takes part in a study.
Treatment What one group in a test receives and the comparison group does not.
Valid Describes a conclusion or measurement that is well-founded and matches the real world.
Variable Anything in a test that can change or be changed.

Average A single value that is most typical of a group of numbers.
Chart A picture of data that uses symbols such as bars, lines or slices of a pie.
Column A vertical line of entries in a table.
Dependent Describes the variable that is expected to change when the other one is changed.
Error The difference between a measured value and the true value.
Graph A drawing that shows the relationship between two or more variables.
Label A small tag or sign that tells what a sample or an axis is.
Legend The key on a chart that lists its variables and shows how each one looks.
Mean The sum of a set of values divided by how many values there are.
Measurement Finding how large or small a quantity is by comparing it with a basic unit.
Median The middle value, separating the higher half of the data from the lower half.
Notes Brief written records made while a test is under way.
Pattern A regularity whose parts repeat in a predictable way.
Plot A graphical way of showing a data set, drawn by hand or by a computer.
Qualitative Describes properties that are observed but not measured with a number.

One common guideline: define a question, gather information, form a hypothesis, test it with an experiment and collect data, analyze the data, draw conclusions, publish the results, and retest. The conclusions can be the start of a fresh hypothesis.

What is the difference between a hypothesis and a theory?

A hypothesis is a proposed explanation that makes a testable prediction. A scientific theory is an explanation that has been tested repeatedly and has evidence behind it. In everyday speech the two words are often swapped.

What is the difference between an independent and a dependent variable?

The independent variable is the one the experimenter changes. The dependent variable is the one expected to change in response, so it is the one measured. A control keeps other variables from influencing the result.
