How it works
This printable microscope word search opens on 12 parts, Eyepiece, Objective lens, Stage, Coarse focus and Diaphragm among them, and 8 lab words such as Slide and Specimen. Beakers, burners and balances are on the lab equipment word search.

Parts, kinds and slide making
Parts of a Microscope, under Start from a list, has 26 words, from Nosepiece and Condenser to Arm and Body tube. Kinds of Microscopes has 24, among them Compound, Stereo, Electron and Confocal. Using a Microscope has 23 for the lab itself: Specimen, Cover slip, Wet mount, Stain and Parfocal.
What the lenses show
Things to See Under a Microscope has 23 words, such as Paramecium, Tardigrade, Volvox, Pollen and Stomata. Seeing Small Things has 21 on magnification and resolution, with Micron, Nanometer, Hooke and Leeuwenhoek.
- Two-word parts are hidden with no gap, so pupils look for OBJECTIVELENS, COARSEFOCUS and BODYTUBE.
- Hard Microscope, with 41 words of nine letters or more, suits a class that already knows the parts.
Questions and answers
What are the parts of a microscope?
A light microscope has an eyepiece, a revolving nosepiece that holds the objective lenses, coarse and fine focus, a stage for the slide, a light source, and a diaphragm and condenser under the stage. A rigid arm carries them all.
How do you calculate total magnification?
Multiply the power of the eyepiece by the power of the objective lens in use. A 10x eyepiece over a 40x objective gives 400x.
What is the difference between coarse and fine focus?
Coarse focus is the larger wheel: turn it first, at the lowest power, to bring the specimen into view. Fine focus is the smaller wheel: it sharpens the image, and at high power it is the only one to turn.
Is the image in a microscope upside down?
In a compound microscope, yes: the image is inverted. The objective lens forms an image inside the microscope, and the eyepiece magnifies that into the enlarged, inverted image the viewer sees.
Does the microscope word search print with an answer key?
Yes: the puzzle is one sheet of Letter or A4 and the key, with each word ringed, is the next. Tick Show clues, not words and Stage prints as "The platform that supports the slide, with a hole in the center for light."
