Seven lists, from the moat to the ball

Castle holds the words of a real fortress: Moat, Portcullis, Battlement, Bailey and Keep, the great tower that medieval builders called the donjon. Royal Court climbs from Page and Squire to Duchess and Queen. A boy became a page at 7 and a squire at 14. Gowns and Jewels, Royal Ball, and Garden and Forest dress the rest of the story. Pick any of the seven under Start from a list.

Old tales behind the clues

The clues cite old tales by author and year and name no character. The pumpkin coach, the fairy godmother and the glass slippers arrived in a French telling of 1697. Hans Christian Andersen stacked twenty mattresses and twenty featherbeds on one pea in 1835.

  • For a princess party, type the birthday child's first name at the end of the word list.
  • Pair the Castle list with a castle picture: pupils find Moat, Bailey and Portcullis, then point to each part.
  • Early finishers can turn the sheet over and write a six-sentence tale using five of the words they found.

Questions and answers

Does it work as a fairy tale word search printable?

Yes. Pick Fairy Tale Magic for Wand, Spindle, Beanstalk and Mermaid, or Story Words for Villain, Quest and Riddle. With Show clues, not words ticked, the clues read as riddles: Mirror is "On the wall of a wicked queen, it answers questions truthfully."

Which clues carry a fairy tale fact?

Frog, in Fairy Tale Magic, and Kiss, in Story Words, tell two halves of one. In the first tale of the Brothers Grimm's 1812 collection the princess throws the frog against a wall. The kiss seems to have arrived later, in English translations.

Why is my child's favorite princess not in it?

Character names and film titles belong to their owners, so every list holds generic words only. Prince and Kingdom are out for another reason: Prince sits inside Princess and King inside Kingdom, and one run of letters would then hold two answers.
