How it works

This probability word search opens on 16 key terms: Likely, Certain, Impossible, Chance, Event, Fraction, Spinner, Dice and Trial among them. Six more lists follow a unit from the chance scale to counting outcomes.

From the chance scale to sample spaces

Under Start from a list, The Probability Scale runs from Impossible through Unlikely and Even chance to Certain. Words of Chance has Possible, Random, Fair and Biased. Coins, Dice and Spinners holds what a class tests with: Marble, Deck, Shuffle, Replacement. Outcomes and Events has Sample space, Favorable, Complement and Independent.

Counting and experiments

Counting the Outcomes has Tree diagram, Combination, Permutation and Factorial. Experiments and Predictions sets Theoretical beside Empirical, with Frequency, Simulation and Expected.

  • Sample space, Tree diagram, Venn diagram, Number line, Even chance and Equally likely hide closed up: SAMPLESPACE.
  • Easy Probability has 43 words of three to five letters for younger classes: Coin, Dice, Flip, Odds, Fair.
  • Tick Show clues, not words and Outcome prints as "One possible result of an experiment."

Questions and answers

What are the words used in probability?

The everyday ones place an event on a scale: impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, certain. The working ones name the parts of an experiment: trial, outcome, event, sample space. All of them are on this page, each with a one-line meaning.

What is the difference between an outcome and an event?

An outcome is one possible result of an experiment, such as rolling a 3. An event is a set of outcomes, such as rolling an odd number, which takes in 1, 3 and 5.

What does a probability of 0 or 1 mean?

A probability is a number from 0 to 1. Zero means the event is impossible and 1 means it is certain. A fair coin lands heads with probability one half, also written 0.5 or 50%.

What is a sample space?

The set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. For one roll of a die it is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6; for one toss of a coin it is heads and tails.

Is it die or dice?

Die is the singular and dice the plural, though dice is sometimes used for one as well. Both words are in the Coins, Dice and Spinners list.
