How it works

This ordinal numbers chart lists 1st to 100th, first to hundredth, in four pairs of columns: the number with its ending, then the word. A heavier line after every fifth row keeps your place.

Print the chart

Press Print the chart. It prints on one page, on Letter or A4. A second chart stops at 20th, and a third runs 1st to 31st, the ordinals a date can take.

Which ending to write

The two letters after the number are the last two letters of the word: first, 1st; second, 2nd; third, 3rd; fourth, 4th. Twenty-first ends like first, so it is 21st.

Words that change their spelling

Five becomes fifth and twelve becomes twelfth. Eight adds only an h, and nine drops its e: eighth, ninth. Twenty to ninety swap y for ie, as in fortieth.

From 21st on, only the last word changes: twenty-first, not twentieth-first.

Questions and answers

What are ordinal numbers?

Numbers that give a position in an order: first, second, third. Counting numbers such as one, two and three, called cardinal numbers, say how many.

What are the ordinal numbers from 1 to 10?

First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth. With digits they are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th.

Why is it 11th and not 11st?

Because the word is eleventh. The ending copies the last two letters of the word, so 11th, 12th and 13th take th, and so does any number that ends in them, such as 112th.

How do you spell 40th and 90th in words?

Fortieth, with no u, as forty has none, and ninetieth, which keeps the e of ninety.

How do you write 100th in words?

Hundredth, or one hundredth. Past 100 only the last word changes: 112th is one hundred twelfth, which is also said one hundred and twelfth.
