How this list was compiled: Own work, written for this site on 2026-10-01. Every question stands over its own drawn number line with four lettered dots: half name a number and ask for its point (dots A to D), half name a point and ask for its number (dots P to S). Each picture is drawn from the same exact numbers as the answer; the value under every dot was then worked out a second time in whole numbers and fractions. No outside fact is used. How it works

This number line quiz draws a line with four lettered points over every question. Some questions name a number and ask for its point. The others name a point and ask for its number.

Number line questions and answers in four topics

A set is 10 questions. The Start from menu under the question keeps the questions to one kind. Whole numbers has lines from 0 to 20 and from 0 to 100, where one space is 1, 5 or 10. Negative numbers has lines through zero, from −10 to 10 and from −5 to 5. Fractions and mixed numbers has lines from 0 to 2 cut into halves, thirds, fourths or eighths. Decimals has tenths from 0 to 2 and hundredths from 0.4 to 0.5.

Use it as a number line test

Each set ends with a score, such as 8 of 10 right. For more number line practice, Next 10 starts another set, and Missed, under More options, brings back the questions answered wrong.

  • Work out what one space is worth. On the 0 to 100 lines it is 5 or 10, not 1.
  • Count spaces, not marks. From 5 to 10 there are five spaces and six marks.

Questions and answers

What is a number line with letter points?

It is a number line where some marks carry a dot and a letter in place of a number. The task is to say which number each letter stands on, or which letter stands on a given number.

How do you find a number on a number line?

Find the written numbers on each side of the point and count the equal spaces between them to see what one space is worth. Then count spaces from the nearer written number.

Where do negative numbers go on a number line?

To the left of zero. −3 is three spaces to the left of zero, as far from zero as 3 is on the right. A number farther left is smaller, so −7 is less than −3.

How do you read decimals on a number line?

When the space from 0 to 1 is cut into ten equal spaces, each one is a tenth, 0.1. When the space from 0.4 to 0.5 is cut into ten, each one is a hundredth, 0.01, so the first mark after 0.4 is 0.41.
