How this list was compiled: Own work: the 12 topics, the 10 words in each and every line under an answer were chosen and written for this site. 120 words, each as an Italian-first and an English-first card. Checked 2026-09-30. The English meaning and the word class of all 120 words against their entries in the WordReference Italian-English dictionary, https://www.wordreference.com/iten/gatto and the like. The gender of all 80 nouns against both that dictionary and the Treccani dictionary, https://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/gatto/ and the like, which also gives the plurals le uova, le braccia, le dita and le mani. How it works
These Italian language flash cards cover 120 first words in 12 topics, from ciao and due to la piazza and l'inverno. Every noun wears il, la, lo or l', and the back names its gender.
Read the full guide
Il, la, lo and the l' that hides the gender
Il and la show a noun's gender: il libro is masculine, la penna feminine. Lo replaces il before z, as in lo zio and lo zaino. Before a vowel both shrink to l', so l'acqua and l'uovo show nothing: turn those cards over. In quiz mode, type the article too: il gatto and un gatto are marked right.
Twelve topics, two cards a word
Topic has the 12 topics and Front of the card the two directions, and the two rows work together. A topic deals 20 cards: its 10 words from Italian, then from English. These Italian flash cards print 12 to a sheet.
Three nouns turn feminine in the plural: l'uovo, le uova; il braccio, le braccia; il dito, le dita.
La mano is feminine although it ends in -o. Its plural is le mani.
Blu and rosa never change. Rosso becomes rossa with a feminine noun, and verde is the same for both.
Questions and answers
What Italian words should a beginner learn first?
Start with a first conversation and a first classroom: greetings, numbers 1 to 10, colors, family, school things, food, animals, the body, clothes, weather and seasons, the town, and ten verbs from essere to dormire. The 120 are our own; no course list is copied.
When does Italian use lo and not il?
Before z, and before s followed by another consonant: lo zio, lo zaino, lo studente. The same words take uno and not un. Before a vowel the article is l', as in l'occhio.
Do I have to type the accent in sì?
No. Quiz mode ignores accent marks, so si passes for sì. The cards and the printed sheets always show the accent.
How do I print the cards?
Choose Italian first under Front of the card, turn a card, then press the print button: a paper card works in both directions. The 120 cards take 10 sheets of Letter or A4, printed on both sides and flipped on the long edge.
