How it works

These French vocabulary flash cards cover 120 words in 12 topics, from bonjour and deux to la fenêtre and il fait froid. Every noun wears le, la or l', and the back flags a silent letter or a false friend.

Read the full guide

Le, la, and the l' that hides the gender

Le or la is the only sign of a French noun's gender: le livre is a book, la livre a pound. Before a vowel or a silent h both shrink to l', so l'école, l'œuf and l'hiver show nothing. Turn those cards over. The line under the answer says feminine, une école, or masculine, un œuf. In quiz mode, type the article too: le chat and un chat are marked right, chat alone is not.

Twelve topics, two cards a word

Topic has the 12 topics and Front of the card the two directions, and the two rows work together. A topic deals 20 cards: its 10 words from French, then from English. English first is the hard way round, 120 cards that ask for the French, spelling and article.

  • Look-alikes to watch: un crayon is a pencil, une robe a dress, la veste a jacket and le pain bread.
  • Gâteau, oiseau and chapeau take x in the plural: les gâteaux. Le cheval becomes les chevaux, l'œil les yeux.
  • Color cards give the feminine too: blanc, blanche; violet, violette. Marron never changes, and a color follows its noun.

Questions and answers

What French vocabulary should a beginner learn first?

Start with a first conversation and a first classroom: greetings, numbers 1 to 10, colors, family, school things, food, animals, the body, clothes, weather and seasons, the house, and ten verbs from être to écrire. The 120 are our own; no language course is copied.

Do I have to type the French accents?

No. Quiz mode takes ecole for école and fenetre for fenêtre, and the joined œ can be typed oe: la soeur, l'oeuf. The screen has no row of accent keys. Cards and printed sheets always show the accents, so copy them from there.

Which letters are silent in French words?

Often the last consonant: the t in chat and lit, the s in trois and bras, the d in pied, the x in deux. Six and dix say their x as s. The back of each card says which, because the page has no sound.

How do I print the French flash cards?

A paper card works in both directions, so choose French first under Front of the card, turn a card, then Print cards: 120 cards on 10 sheets. Print both sides and flip on the long edge. A single topic is 20 cards on 2 sheets.
