How it works
This hangman printable swaps the usual drawing for a snowman: each wrong guess traces 1 of its 8 parts, or 10 on the easy sheet. The 16 sheets also offer an apple tree, pie slices, flower petals, a rocket countdown and tally boxes.

How a round works on these sheets
One player thinks of a word, writes the category and shades the letter boxes the word does not need. The others guess one letter at a time. A right letter goes in every box where it belongs. A wrong one costs a part of the picture. Either way, cross it off the bank. A guesser may try the whole word at any point.
Which words are hardest to guess
Short words are the hard ones. A 2010 study for Wolfram Research found jazz, buzz and fizz among the hardest to guess, all short and built from rare letters. Give young players a sheet that allows 10 wrong guesses.
- The most common letters in English are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R, D, L and U. Many open with the vowels.
- For spelling practice, take the words from this week's list. Whoever picks the word has to spell it correctly to place each letter.
- Agree on house rules before the first round: whether proper nouns count, no slang and no classmates' names.
Questions and answers
How many wrong guesses do you get in hangman?
As many as the picture has parts. No official count exists. On these sheets the flower allows 6, the snowman and the pie 8, and the apple tree, rocket and tally boxes 10. Draw-your-own sheets leave a blank for a number the players agree on.
Why do these sheets use a snowman?
Not every classroom wants the traditional picture on the wall, and the game does not need it. The drawing is only a tally of wrong guesses, so a traced snowman, crossed-off apples or shaded pie slices keep score the same way.
Are these hangman sheets free to print?
Yes, all 16 sheets are free to print. A page holds 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 games, so one sheet per pair lasts several rounds. Choose Letter or A4 before you press Print hangman sheet.
