The rules, and why good players draw

Two players take turns marking X and O on a 3 by 3 grid. Three in a row, column or diagonal wins. With best play the game is a draw every time. If X opens in a corner, O must take the center. If X opens in the center, O must take a corner.

How the ultimate tic tac toe printable works

The ultimate board is nine small boards in a 3 by 3 grid. The square you mark sends your opponent to the matching small board. A small board you win counts as your mark on the large board. Sent to a board that is won or full? Play in any open board.

  • The Christmas tic tac toe printable has five trees and five stars to color and cut out. No game uses more than five of either.
  • On a multiplication tic tac toe printable, say the product before you mark the square. A wrong answer loses the turn.
  • When every game is a draw, flip the rule so three in a row loses, or play four in a row on a bigger board.
