Graphs Worksheets

Choose bar graphs or picture graphs, to read or to draw, then print a fresh sheet with its answer key.

Scroll the preview to see every page. Paper copies fit US Letter and A4 and need no colour ink.

2 graphs on one page, plus the answer key. Sheet MHV1C3.

Questions

Bars stop between lines only on a scale of 2 or 10.

Use your own numbers The sheet uses made-up data.

Type what your class counted: two to 6 rows, whole numbers from 0 to 1,000. The graph, its questions and the answer key are made from your numbers. They stay in this browser unless you share the link.

The parts of a bar graph and a picture graph

Show the table

The data on these sheets is made up, about everyday things a class might count, unless you type in your own. Every question is answered from the numbers the graph was drawn from, so the key always agrees with the bars.

PartWhat it does
Titlesays what was counted, so the graph can be read without the table it came from
Scalethe numbers along the counting axis. They start at 0 and go up in equal steps: by 1, 2, 5 or 10
Barone for each category, all the same width, with gaps between them. Its end lines up with its count on the scale
Between two linesa bar that stops halfway between 4 and 6 on a scale of 2 stands for 5
Picture grapha row of symbols for each category. The key says how many each symbol stands for
Half a symbolstands for half the key: with a key of 2, three and a half symbols are 7
How many moresubtract the smaller count from the larger one. For a total, add the counts

A short code sits at the foot of every sheet and of its answer key, so loose pages can be matched. The share link rebuilds that sheet, number for number: a key printed next week still fits the copies handed out today.

How it works

These graphs worksheets print new data every time. The page opens on 2 bar graphs to read, 5 questions each, on one page with a key. Picture graphs, graphs to draw and your own class numbers are one tap away.

Read a graph, draw one, or use your own data

Read a bar graph is practice in interpreting graphs: most, fewest, how many, how many more and the total. Draw the bars has pupils create a bar graph from a table, with tally marks to count first while no number passes 20. Bars can run sideways: set Bars to Horizontal. For a bar graph of your own data, open Use your own numbers.

Common Core settings for grades 1 to 3

Grade 1 (1.MD.4): By 1 and Categories 3. Grade 2 (2.MD.10): a single-unit scale and up to four categories, which is how the page opens. Grade 3 (3.MD.3): scaled graphs, so choose By 2, By 5 or By 10. Grades 4 and 5 (4.MD.4, 5.MD.2) ask for line plots only, which this page does not make.

  • Tick Bars that stop between lines on By 2: 7 is a bar between 6 and 8, or three and a half circles.
  • Labels travel inside a share link, so type categories such as Bus or Walk, never pupil names.
  • For older classes, type your own numbers up to 1,000: the page picks a scale as large as 100.

Questions and answers

Can I use these as graphing sheets for kindergarten?

Partly. Set Scale to By 1, Categories to 3 and Questions to Most, fewest, how many. Every count then stays at 10 or less, the Common Core kindergarten limit (K.MD.3). The labels are words and there are no pictures to count, so read them aloud.

Is a picture graph the same as a pictogram?

Yes. England's curriculum says pictogram and bar chart where American standards say picture graph and bar graph. Light a picture graph task and set Scale to By 2: each circle then stands for 2. The sheet itself prints picture graph and American spellings.

Can pupils graph data they collected themselves?

Yes. Open Use your own numbers, type 2 to 6 rows such as Dog 9, Cat 6, Fish 3 and press Use these numbers. The page picks the scale and writes the questions and key, so a class survey becomes a graphing practice worksheet.

Are there line graphs, pie graphs or line plots here?

No. This page makes bar graphs and picture graphs, the two graphs in Common Core 2.MD.10 and 3.MD.3. For plotting points on a grid, use the coordinate plane worksheets.
