Candy lists and dessert lists
For a dessert word search printable, pick Bakery Desserts, which runs from Brownie to Profiterole, or Frozen and Spoon Desserts, with Sundae, Gelato and Tiramisu. Tastes and Textures holds 21 describing words, such as Tangy, Gooey and Velvety, a ready word bank for descriptive writing.
Sweet word origins
Many dessert names are plain words in another language. Eclair is French for a flash of lightning, mousse means foam and parfait means perfect. Tiramisu is Italian for pick me up. Marshmallow is named after the marsh mallow plant, which grows in wet ground, and licorice comes from the Greek for sweet root. Each origin is a clue, so a sheet with Show clues, not words ticked is a word history quiz.
- Candy Making suits a science lesson on dissolving and crystals: rock candy is large sugar crystals grown on a string.
Questions and answers
Are there brand names in the candy lists?
No. Every word is a generic name, such as Lollipop, Jawbreaker, Taffy or Nougat. To add a favorite that is missing, type it at the end of the word list under the grid and it joins the puzzle.
Which candy and dessert words look alike in the grid?
Sorbet and Sherbet, in Frozen and Spoon Desserts, and Macaron and Macaroon, in Bakery Desserts. The clues tell them apart. Sorbet has no dairy and sherbet a little milk or cream. A macaron is a filled almond meringue pair, a macaroon a chewy cookie.
When does a candy word search fit a lesson?
On the days when candy is already on everyone's mind: a Halloween party, Valentine's Day or the last day before a break. The clues add dates for a history corner: Lollipop has been in print since 1784 and Cupcake since 1828.
