Ten lists, from cities to pasta shapes

The 274 words sit in 10 themed lists of 16 to 43 words: Italian Cities, Regions of Italy, Map of Italy, Italian Landmarks, Famous Italians, Italian Art, Italian Music, Pasta Shapes, Italian Food and Life in Italy. Regions of Italy has 18 of the 20: Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia are longer than the 14 letters an entry may have.

Pasta clues that translate the Italian

Tick Show clues, not words, and a fact replaces each word. Pupils read "Explorer from Florence; the Americas are named after his first name, Amerigo", work out Vespucci, then hunt for it. The pasta clues translate: Farfalle means butterflies, Orecchiette little ears and Vermicelli little worms.

  • Grades 2 to 4: pick Easy Italy and 8 words, then open More options and tick Large print. Short words include Pisa, Alps and Boot.
  • The grid drops spaces: Leaning Tower hides as LEANINGTOWER and Marco Polo as MARCOPOLO. Tell pupils first.
  • Grade 6 up: pick Hard Italy and press Hard so words may run backwards; the grid grows when a word needs room.
