Questions and answers

What is the formula for density?

Density is mass divided by volume, written ρ = m/V with the Greek letter rho. A block with a mass of 20 grams and a volume of 10 milliliters has a density of 2 grams per milliliter.

Why do some objects float and others sink?

An object with an average density greater than the fluid around it tends to sink, because it weighs more than the fluid it displaces. A less dense object floats, and displaces fluid equal in weight to itself.

What is the difference between density and buoyancy?

Density is a property of a material: its mass for each unit of volume. Buoyancy is a force: the upward push of a fluid on an object in it, equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces.

Why does ice float on water?

Ice is about 8.3 percent less dense than liquid water, an unusual property for a solid. So it floats, which keeps bodies of water from freezing from the bottom up.

Does the density word search print with an answer key?

Yes. The puzzle prints on one sheet of Letter or A4 and its key, the grid with every word ringed, on a second. With Show clues, not words ticked, Float is listed as "To rest at the top of a fluid without going under."
