How it works
A demonstrative pronoun points at something without naming it: this and these for what is near, that and those for what is far. This and that stand for one thing, these and those for more than one.

Near or far, one or many
Two clues settle each blank. The verb gives the number: is goes with this or that, are with these or those. A place gives the distance: ___ in my hand is a robin's feather takes This, and ___ across the street are fire trucks takes Those.
Pronoun or adjective
Under Set, pick Pronoun or adjective? Each sentence repeats one word in brackets. In That is my cousin's coat, that stands alone, so it is a pronoun. In That coat is my cousin's, a noun follows it, so it is an adjective. Some grammar books say determiner for the second kind.
- That can also join two parts of a sentence, as in the book that I lost. Sentences of that kind are left off these sheets.
Questions and answers
Is there a demonstrative pronouns worksheet pdf for 1st grade?
Yes. Press Print worksheet and choose Save as PDF as the printer. The Common Core asks first graders to use determiners such as demonstratives (L.1.1h), and the sentences of the first set are short.
Do this, that, these and those only point at things you can see?
No. They also point back to something just said: in Nobody told me that, that stands for a whole statement. The first set keeps to things near and far, where the clue is in the sentence.
Does the worksheet have an answer key?
Yes. The last page is the key, with the right choice circled under each sentence. Uncheck Add an answer key as the last page under More options to print the sheet alone.
