How this list was compiled: Written by hand for this page: 149 sentences, each with one blank that only one of there, their and they're fits, about a third of each. The rule was checked against Wiktionary's entries for they're (a contraction of they are; confusion with their and there is common) and their (the possessive of they), en.wiktionary.org/wiki/they're and en.wiktionary.org/wiki/their, read 2026-09-23. No person, brand or character is named, and no published worksheet was copied. Licence: own work

How it works

Each free sheet draws 8 of 149 sentences, about a third for each word. There is a place or starts there is, their shows something belongs to them, and they're is short for they are.

Read the full guide

The they are test

Read the sentence with they are in the blank. If it still makes sense, circle they're. If something belongs to them (their bikes, their dog), circle their. Otherwise it is there: a place (over there) or the start of there is and there are.

Short or longer sentences

Set picks Short sentences (six words or fewer) or Longer sentences, where some use two of the words at once: The kids left their jackets over there on the bench.

Questions and answers

Is there a they, their, they're worksheet with answers?

Yes. The answer key prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options. The key is the same sheet with the right word circled in every sentence, so each new sheet brings its own.

What grade learns there, their and they're?

The Common Core language standards list there and their among frequently confused words in grade 4 (L.4.1g). Many classes meet them sooner, which is what the Short sentences set is for.

Can I use my own sentences?

Yes. Type one a line, with ___ for the blank, an equals sign, the right word, then a slash before each wrong one: We sat ___. = there / their / they're. Your lines replace ours.
