Sound

On a phone or a tablet the silent switch mutes this sound as well, and the page cannot tell. Press Test sound to check.

Music

It plays while the timer runs and stops at the end.

Keys: Space starts and pauses, R resets, F is full screen. They rest while a button or a field has the focus.

How it works

This classroom timer with music plays while the countdown runs and stops when the time is up. Three of the four tracks are calm, and Tidy-up is the clean up timer: it speeds up. All are made in the browser.

A musical timer with four tracks

Each track is a small set of rules that writes new notes as it goes, so there is no song to sing along to. Drift is one slow chord every 4 seconds, Meadow is soft plucked notes and Lantern is a music box in three time. Tidy-up bounces at 104 beats a minute, then climbs to 160 over the last third: from about 1:40 left on 5 minutes.

When the music plays and when it stops

Music plays only while the countdown runs. Pause and it fades out in under a second. Resume and it returns. The routines Freeze dance and Pass the question depend on that. At 0:00 the music stops, and an end sound follows only if you chose one. Track and volume are remembered.

  • For Reading to quiet music, pick Drift in the Music list, then bring the Volume slider under More options down to about a fifth.

Questions and answers

Is this a calm classroom timer?

It can be. For quiet work, pick Drift, Meadow or Lantern in the Music list. The page opens on Tidy-up, made for packing away.

Can I use it as a clean up timer for kids at school?

Yes. Leave the Music list on Tidy-up and give one rule: done before the music stops. Two-minute desk clear, Centers clean-up and End-of-day pack-up each set a length and their own cues.

Why can't I hear any music?

Music begins when you press Start with music and plays only while the countdown runs, never while it is paused. Then check Volume under More options, the device volume and where the laptop sends its sound, which is often the projector.

Can I play my own song or playlist with the timer?

Not inside this page. It makes its own music and cannot load a file or a streaming service, so nothing with lyrics reaches the class. You can leave the music off and play a song from another app, but it will not stop at 0:00.

Can I use it as a 30 minute classroom timer?

Yes. Press 30 min under Ready lengths, or choose a Ready-made routine such as Half hour art session, which sets the length for you. On 30 minutes the Tidy-up track starts to climb at about 10:00 left, in time for a 10 minute clean-up.

All 21 routines

Tidy-up track: clear and pack 6

  • Bedroom tidy at home Tidy-up track, on a phone propped on a shelf. One job at a time: clothes for 2:30, books for 2:30, toys for 1:40, then the floor check while the music climbs over the last 3:20. Check the phone's silent switch first, because it mutes the music. Cues: 7:30 Clothes done? Now books; 5:00 Books done? Now toys; 3:20 Music speeds up. Floor check.
  • Centers clean-up Tidy-up track. Each center puts its own tubs back on the shelf first. The music starts to climb at about 1:00 left, which is the signal to leave the center, check the floor on the way and sit on the carpet. Cues: 1:00 Faster now. Floor check, then carpet.
  • End-of-day pack-up Tidy-up track. Three minutes for mailboxes and folders, 3 minutes to pack bags, 2 minutes for coats and the line. 3 + 3 + 2 fills the eight. The music begins to climb at about 2:40 left, a little before coats, so nobody is still at the mailboxes when it gets fast. Cues: 5:00 Folders done. Now pack your bag; 2:00 Coats on, then join the line.

Tidy-up track: clear and pack, continued

  • Silent line-up Tidy-up track. One minute to push in chairs and line up at the door without a word, so the music is the only sound in the room. It climbs over about the last 20 seconds. Anyone not in line when it stops goes to the back. Cues: 0:20 Faster. Be in line when it stops.
  • Tidy-up to the music Choose the Tidy-up track. The beat holds steady for the first 3:20 and starts to climb at about 1:40 left. Give the class one rule: floor and table tops are done before the music speeds up, chairs and hands before it stops. Cues: 1:40 Music speeds up. Chairs in next; 0:30 Stand behind your chair.
  • Two-minute desk clear Tidy-up track. Books inside desks, pencils in cases, nothing on top but what the next lesson needs. On a 2 minute countdown the music starts to climb at about 0:40 left, so the change comes quickly. Say what the next lesson needs before you press Start. Cues: 0:40 Faster now. Desk tops empty.

Calm tracks: quiet work 6

  • Drawing to a music box Lantern track, which sounds like a music box in three time. One sheet, one pencil, no erasers, and pupils draw whatever the sound suggests. At 5:00 left they add a background, and at 1:00 they sign the drawing. Cues: 5:00 Halfway. Add a background; 1:00 Sign your drawing.
  • Listen to the music box Lantern track. Everyone closes their eyes and listens until the music stops, then tells a partner one thing they heard: high or low, fast or slow, a pattern that came back. The notes are made fresh each time, so no two listens are the same. Cues: 0:10 Nearly over. Keep listening.
  • Morning arrival Meadow track, switched on before the first pupil walks in. Unpack, hand in notes, start the morning task. The rule is simple: when the music stops, everyone is in a seat. At 2:00 left the cue hurries anyone still at the coat hooks. Cues: 2:00 Finish unpacking. Seats soon.
  • Reading to quiet music Drift track with the Volume slider about a fifth of the way along. Drift is one slow chord every 4 seconds, with no tune and no words to follow. The disc-only view hides the digits, so there is nothing to watch. When the music stops, pupils finish the sentence and close the book. Cues: 1:00 Read to the end of your page.
  • Rest after lunch Drift track, volume low, lights down. Heads on desks or eyes on a book, no talking. Leave the end sound set to No sound, so the only signal is the music fading out when the time is up. Pupils sit up when they notice the quiet. Cues: 0:30 When the music stops, sit up.
  • Writing while the music plays Drift or Meadow track. Agree on one rule: while the music plays, nobody talks and nobody leaves a seat. If the room gets loud, press Space. The music stops with the countdown, the class notices, and both start again when the room is quiet. Cues: 5:00 Finish the paragraph you are on; 1:00 Last sentence, then pencils down.

Stop-and-go games 5

  • Freeze dance Meadow or Tidy-up track. Pupils dance while the music plays. Press Space and the music stops with the countdown: everyone freezes. Press Space again and both carry on. The countdown only runs while the music does, so this is 3 minutes of dancing however long the freezes last. Cues: 1:00 Last minute of dancing.
  • Musical spots Meadow track. Lay out one paper spot for each pupil and have the class walk around them. Pause the music and everyone finds a spot. Take one spot away each round. Nobody is out: a pupil without a spot names a fact from the lesson and rejoins. Walking only. Cues: 2:00 Halfway. Walking feet only.
  • Pass the question Meadow track, class in a circle. A beanbag goes around while the music plays. Pause it, and whoever holds the beanbag answers a review question, with help from the pupil on the left if they want it. Pause about every 30 seconds and the 5 minutes of passing give ten questions. Cues: 0:30 One last question.
  • Stretch to the chords Drift track. A new chord arrives every 4 seconds. Hold each stretch for two chords, which is 8 seconds, and change when the third begins. Fifteen stretches fill the 2 minutes. The halfway cue comes during the eighth: finish it seated, then stand for the rest. Cues: 1:00 Halfway. Stand after this one.
  • Walk, stop, pair up Meadow track, with a question on the board. Pupils walk while the music plays. Pause it, and each pairs with the nearest person to answer. Resume and they walk on to a new partner. The countdown counts only the walking: pause about every 30 seconds and 4 minutes give eight partners. Cues: 0:30 One more partner.

Half hour blocks 4

  • Half hour art session Tidy-up track, volume low. Twenty minutes of painting, then 10 to clean up, because paint takes longer to put away than to get out: 20 + 10 fills the half hour. On 30 minutes the beat starts to climb at about 10:00 left, so the music itself says brushes down. Cues: 10:00 Brushes down. Clean-up starts; 2:00 Tables wiped? Wash your hands.
  • Half hour of quiet reading Drift track, volume low. Twenty-five minutes of reading, then 5 to fill in the reading log: 25 + 5 fills the half hour. The disc-only view hides the digits, so nobody counts minutes. When the music stops, logs close and books go back. Cues: 5:00 Finish the page. Fill in your log.
  • Indoor recess to music Meadow track. Recess moves indoors, and the rule is that every game is back in its box before the music stops. At 5:00 left the cue starts the packing away, and at 1:00 everyone is walking to a seat. Cues: 5:00 Five minutes. Start packing away; 1:00 Back to your seats.
  • Lunch club half hour Lantern or Meadow track, volume low, for a chess, craft or board game club. Twenty-five minutes of play and 5 to pack away: 25 + 5. The music stopping is the bell, so nobody has to call time across a room full of games. Cues: 5:00 Finish this round. No new game.

How this list was compiled: Own work, written on 2026-09-18 from common classroom practice. Each routine is something a class does while the music plays, and each one names the track that suits it, because a routine cannot choose the track: you do. No recording is used or linked. The four tracks are generated in your browser, so there is no audio file, no composer and no licence to cite. The Tidy-up track starts to speed up when a third of the countdown is left, which is where the routines' times come from. The timings are suggestions, not rules or research findings. Licence: own work
